Publisher's Description
From Avery Lee:
VirtualDub is a video capture and processing utility licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It is designed to be a general utility that can trim and clean up video before exporting to tape or processing with another program. It does not possess the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files, which you can extend with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is best at processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and handle BMP image sets.
New in version 1.5.10: Removed "accept partial streams" from MPEG-1 options and made it enabled by default; added warning. Filters are now notified whether a render is for preview or output purposes. Bug fixes.

"Wonderful For Frame Capture Of Video Files"
Version: VirtualDub 1.5.10
Pros
This review may not tell you what you want to know, but I will tell you one thing VirtualDub excels at:
Frame capture. Somewhat unwieldy (maybe 50,000+ jpgs) but it does the trick flawlessly. Open a video file, and VirtualDub can be used to capture EVERY SINGLE FRAME into jpgs, with great picture quality.
If you are looking for a frame capture tool, use this, it's free and powerful.
Cons
I only use this program for frame capture, for which it is perfect. Other than that, I don't know.

"frame by frame, second by second"

Cons
I hope you like avi.

"Good product"
Version: VirtualDub 1.5.10
Pros
Once you get to grips with it, it's straightforward and powerful. One issue I have is that there are so many features it's trying to be all things to everybody so you wade your way through a host of fccilities to get to discover what you want. The upside of that is that it had loads of features!
Cons
As others have said, no asf support. Also doesn't retain last used settings so you have to manually reload the codecs you want to use each time. It's a minor irritation in an otherwise great product but occasionally I end up with a drive full of uncompressed movie because I forgot to reload the codec. It may be my fault rather than theirs, but they could do more to help forgetful types like me.

"Excellent video editing program"
Version: VirtualDub 1.5.10
Pros
Stable, easy-to-use, video editing tool. Interface is intuitive and easy to follow. You can use this to simply cut and paste frames or apply dozens of filters for special effects. Easily preview the output before writing the file. And, it's free! No spyware or nag screens. One of the very best freeware programs ever.
Cons
Some have noted that they wind up with large files. Simply choose which type of compression you prefer (under Video -> Compression) before writing the file. Leaving it to the default which is 'uncompressed' will write a BIG file. Does not support .wmv but this is not a con to me as it nowhere states it can do this. Convert your wmv file to avi or mpg before editing (use SUPER or other conversion application).

"Excellent freeware, better features than most; Amazing work."
Version: VirtualDub 1.5.10
Pros
The only freeware video editor i have found so far that will rotate, adjust gamm/contrast/brightness, do smoothing (but save dges), delete unwanted portion of timeline... very flexible options, yet good defaults to start with.
Help file has very good descriptions of the video filters. Well written.
*wow*
Cons
So far, only problem was the output files were HUGE; found out after a bit that compression on output files is OFF by default (and with good reason, uses the codecs/hardware laready on your machine, which varies to much to use any one by default, not to mention any quality loss); once i turned on any one of several choices of compressions, file sizes went back down.

"very hopeful after readin so much positive feedback"
Version: VirtualDub 1.5.10
Cons
1st AVI I tried to open prompted this message: Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID'... went on to say... DirectShow codecs such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.
When I did get another AVI to open ?!, & was able to edit out 3portions, the default settings to save new version, saved to a 600+MB !!! the original was only 36MB.
Oh & start up/install, was in zip format, so guessed as to which file to extract & open to start up, then had to guess how to run.
Lastly the editted version was bad, with audio/video skips & irregularities.
call this the not ready for primetime version.

"Essential"
Version: VirtualDub 1.5.10
Pros
VirtualDub in the various versions can be confusing to beginners, I recommend you install:
VirtualDub 1.6.15 or later, orginal program, no mpeg2 support.
VirtualDubMPEG2 1.5.10 supports mpeg2 files
Virtual DubMod 1.5.10.2 build 2542 (22Feb2006) supports mpeg2 and more.
All are stable, and easy to use, be sure to read about them.
Cons
none, except unfortunately all the versions of VirtualDub and VirtualDubMod are unable to support asf (WMV) files.

"very easy to use"
Version: VirtualDub 1.5.10
Pros
this product is very easy to use, especially the basic steps for deleting unwanted scenes/commercials from video. figuring out the program was easy because of the descriptions that pop up when you place the cursor over any button.
Cons
although program allows you to save video using different compression rates it only saves as AVI which are huge files. adding a save as MPEG1 would be a great space saver.
