This program admirably quashes banner ads, but its pop-up blocker needs a lot of work. We had a bit of trouble properly installing VG Banner Shooter, until we discovered you must extract all the files from the ZIP archive to another folder. After we toughed our way through that process, we were glad to see a rather straightforward tabbed interface with a long list of banner ads you can choose to block or allow. You'll also find a white list for adding specific sites from which you'd like to receive banners and pop-ups and a log that lists all failed intruders. In our tests surfing the Web, the program had no problem stopping banners, though sadly, the pop-up blocker was ineffective in almost every instance. If you already have a tool for ridding yourselves of pop-ups, this utility makes a nice system addition, but don't count on it for comprehensive protection.
