    Version: Usenet Explorer 1.7

    "Nice little package"

    by broke_n_bummin on June 5, 2007

Pros: It doesn't take up much space, does multipart assembly without flaws.

Cons: The search was pretty crippled in 1.7. It would do the search just fine, but had trouble importing. V 1.8, they changed the engine, now instead of crippled, it's totally useless. I couldn't tell you if the newer version works or not.

    "Excellent newsreader"

    by *** power user *** on May 18, 2007

Pros: I see here 3 negative reviews which were posted about the same time - April, 23-24, which is probably an attempt to misguide new users and advertise NewsBin - apparently posted by the same individual given there are no other user comments for about a year or so.

The program never crashed on me, the download even doesn't use an installer featuring only a single executable file, so no spyware can be bundled with the program.

With NewsBin I did have RAM issues when trying download large newsgroups, with Usenet Explorer I still can use even my old computer for other tasks.

Cons: I would like to see more easy to understand help material on the site, although all my emails to support were replied promplty.

    "Confusing to Configure, Always Crashing"

by snworf on April 24, 2007

Pros: I really wanted to use this program but could not get it to download headers. It would start and then just stop with no errors. I tried to email for support but no on ever wrote back to me.

Cons: I often experienced crashing with the program. After I would try to download headers it would stop even though I had a connection still. When I tried to open the group that some of the headers did download for, my system would show the "blue screen of death" and then crash.

    "OK Newsreader, Terrible Support"

by chaznet on April 23, 2007

Pros: There's a steep learning curve to navigate the options screens, but once you study up, the program becomes more intuitive.

Cons: If support is important, look elsewhere. It's a one-man-band operation, with a temperMENTAL guy running the show. Word your support requests with extreme caution, or be prepared for responses that resemble personal attacks. Search GoogleGroups for a history of heated exchanges between the author and others. While the product is good, there are other choices.

    "Spyware?"

    by varania_vasquez on April 24, 2007

Pros: I am trying to learn about news groups and different software for them. So far this one is the most complicated to use. Outlook Express is a lot easier but does not do files (I think). Newsbin Pro is a happy medium because it downloads files and is more user friendly than usenet explorer.

Cons: I tried Usenet Explorer a few times with new versions, for some reason it sets of my Spyware warnings. I have not figured out why because I never actually downloaded anything except the headers. I am new to news groups so maybe I did something wrong. I am not sure what Spyware is exactly, but my virus software has protection for it, and when I run Usenet Explorer, I get tons of alerts about "potential spyware" :(
