Unlocker is a utility for bypassing some of the more frustrating restrictions on files in Windows, allowing you to delete or access files that were previously "off limits."

There isn't much to say about this application other than that it works. There aren't really any features to it and it basically works in the background, which was confusing at first. We tried to find a Help button or Tutorial included in the download, but couldn't find any. They creator of Unlocker seems to be operating under the assumption that the user already knows how to use the utility if they are interested in downloading it. It would be a lot more user-friendly, however, if there was some kind of tutorial included for those who want to use it but don't know the inner workings of the program. Without it, there could be issues in the future for someone who isn't familiar enough with computers. Overall, there's no obvious indication that the Unlocker is actually working other than the icon on the desktop and certain files and folders being accessible when they weren't previously.

The download process was pretty quick and simple. You do need to read everything, though, because you could end up with more than just the utility you wanted to download and install. In one of the last installation steps you can easily miss the Bing toolbar download option, for example. If you don't want to go through uninstalling/deleting extra programs, then make sure you read and unclick where needed.

"Malware eveywhere"

November 11, 2014  |  By brolin79

 |  Version: Unlocker 1.9.2

Pros

The program still makes what it promise

Cons

You can't call freeware a program that tries to install you crap even being careful. It's sad because i used this program some years ago and i liked it but now for me is garbage.

"Very Tricky"

September 17, 2014  |  By farsickle

 |  Version: Unlocker 1.9.2

Pros

Removes Unwanted Off-Limits files etc

Cons

Very tricky additional Data from this v.1.9.2
UnlockerApplication.exe in Program Files [cannot be found!]., but upon C:\ search (first pass = No Result)., 2nd Pass [Search File Contents] results in 1xFile [a XML Document File] where the .exe [Linked to the Registry] exists = "Your Start-Up cannot be altered & it slips back to Unlockers settings each Re-Boot"
Remove the XML Document File, then CCleaner can remove the Registry Entry., Then you can set your own Boot settings.
+
All the above criticisms

Summary

Do Not Consider It

 |  Version: Unlocker 1.9.2

Pros

It helped me to get rid of a half-way deleted folder.

Cons

Watch out download procedures. Don't take something you don't need other than the "Unlocker".

"Best unlocker I've seen. Not malware but evil installer"

March 18, 2014  |  By fibrofogged

 |  Version: Unlocker 1.9.2

Pros

The program itself is 5-star; it has served me very well for years. Great when you need to delete/rename/move a file or eject media safely, but are blocked. Finds the root cause fast; reduces the need to reboot.

Unlocker is nearly always able to quickly tell me ALL the processes that are holding on to a particular file or folder tree. I then exit those programs normally (for me, Search Everything is often the culprit), then run Unlocker again. When the list is empty, I eject the media or delete the file. I personally avoid harsh tactics like the Unlock and Kill features, though they've worked well for me too (they are rarely necessary).

Cons

The sneaky, evil, misleading installer tries to trick you into installing the "recommended" accompanying bloatware. (I guess that's how he makes money from the free tool.)

Only CAREFUL users should attempt to install this!

Summary

I've become rather dependent on this tool over the years; it works well. But its installer tries very hard to trick you into installing bloatware along with it. Currently (Mar 2014), the Yahoo Toolbar is labeled in an especially misleading way. Do NOT click blindly--read every install dialog carefully! To give you an idea, just now I installed it and had to do 5 extra steps to skip/decline:
+ chose English, OK, Next, I Agree.
- Clicked Skip! (clicked neither "express" nor "custom" install of Yahoo Toolbar).
- - Clicked Decline to confirm the Skip.
- Clicked Skip (Caramava)
- Clicked Skip (Convert Files for Free)
- Clicked Decline (Optimizer Pro)
+ Clicked Next (confirm install location)
+ To be safe, I unticked "Check for Unlocker updates", but ticking "Explorer extension" is quite helpful.
+ Clicked Install.

"Unlocker does the job on XP and Win 7"

February 16, 2014  |  By zaava1

 |  Version: Unlocker 1.9.2

Pros

It opens files I've had trouble getting into after reloading my OS.

Cons

Sometimes says it can't unlock and I have to move and relocate the file before i can open it.

Install tries to load unwanted programs. Need to be careful to keep them from installing.

Summary

Unlocker is a good program for opening files that refuse to allow XP or Win7 to open them. I use it for opening old files created by old Windows progs.

Unlocks your desires
Unlocks your true potential

Cons

none - absolutely none (10+ chars)
