Version: Ubuntu 8.10
"It is a very robust operating system."
Pros: It is very robust and has games, graphic editing, multimedia such as music, movie players and a bit torrent client. It also has business programs such as open source office and encryption software.
Cons: most programs available for download are for windows or mac, not any type of unix or linux.
Summary: This is a great product. I think everyone should switch to this operating system which is open source.

Version: Ubuntu 8.10
"How I kissed Windows goodbye (but still double-boot)"
Pros: 100% easier to use than only a few years ago. Finally, Linux is a real out-of-the-box alternative to Windows. Also comes with a complete repository of open source software (office suite, photo editing, chat, games) so you're ready to go immediately!
Cons: While 95% of tasks are self explanitory, there is still a defnate learning curve. Certain things that were automated in Windows are not in Linux, and vice versa. Also, file management system is different and disorientating.
Summary: I turned to linux operating systems in dispair when my Thinkpad's Windows crashed and the backup (blue ThinkVantage key) turned out to be faulty. A true worst case scenario: I was stuck in Beijing without an international warranty and an expensive l... read more >>

Pros: easy to install
easy to use
any issues I've had have been easily resolved
the challenge of working out how to do things is funCons: during the first month or so you will need to find out new ways to do things that were second nature on windows
Summary: It is fun to use, it is free to use, it can become what you need and nothing more or what you need and every thing.
I duel booted for a while to get used to Ubuntu but after not too long I got rid of windows. I have a lot more stability and a f... read more >> -

Version: Ubuntu 8.10
Pros: Easy to install
Supportive forum
Clean, minimal operating system.
Ability to keep Windows for the very few apps I can't use - like Publisher.
Every problem I have encountered there has been a straight forward solution.Cons: None whatsoever
Summary: When my ailing and ageing Windows ME was no longer supported by anyone or anything any more and viruses becoming too problematic, I was able to turn to Ubuntu/Linux. I did not have the $ to blow on more Windows, no longer wanted to be trapped into t... read more >>
