Publisher's description
From United Devices :This free download lets individuals use their PCs to participate in major science projects, including searching for the cure for cancer. Not only can you actually participate in significant projects, you can literally watch as your computer crunches the numbers and analyzes the components of DNA via a graphical interface on an optional screensaver. The Agent runs unobtrusively in the background without disturbing other regular computer usage, using the spare power (CPUs) that the computer isn't using. Also, while the PC does the computational work, the program registers sweepstakes entries for you and gives you the opportunity to win cool prizes.

Version: UD Agent 3.0
"Increases Public Scientific Knowledge"
Pros: There are three main reasons to download and run this program, regardless of what people say about who gets money from sponsoring it.
#1. The research collected goes out publicly in the scientific community. That means everyone working on a cure can get a research boost through this project.
#2. You make a difference. Usually, the individual doesn't affect the grand scheme of things. In this case, you do. You can see what your computer is doing and learn about how it helps.
#3. It's practical. Think about it; screen savers run when you're not around. So, which is more important: Cool looks, or important real-world advances in science?
Cons: Yes, companies sponsoring the program, developing the software, and running the collaboration make money. Who cares? You're not giving them money, they're being paid by researchers who want a cure. You're speeding up that cure. Once the cure is found, they won't be making money. But lives will be being saved.

Version: UD Agent 3.0
Pros: They do a lot of medical projects. A little more practical then searching for aliens in space. Participants can win prizes. Some people get miffed because companies that use UD for their research have to pay, but that doesn't bother me.
Cons: Graphical component is boring. No real sense of how the overall project is going. No add-ons like the ones for the SETI project.
