Trend Micro provides comprehensive security protection for your PC and home network. We only wish the trial didn't dominate our computer's resources while it did so. However, if you have the memory and CPU to handle the program's multiple processes, PC-Cillin 2007 is a great all-in-one solution for your security needs.
The PC-Cillin 2007 interface will be familiar to anyone who's used ZoneAlarm, Windows Update Manager, or any other app designed for mainstream PC users. Six clickable tabs on the left--Overview, Virus & Spyware Controls, Personal Network & Firewall Controls, Internet & Email Controls, Other Settings, and Help & Support--display settings and options in a main window on the right. Trend Micro's promised online security serve, TrendSecure, uses an expandable sidebar, but the message now only reads "Coming Soon..."
As mentioned, the PC-Cillin package is certainly comprehensive. Aside from the expected protection against viruses and spyware, the application also has customizable spam filters, phishing alerts, and new virus warnings. One of the more interesting is data-theft protection that will prevent specific private information such as social security and credit card numbers from being sent via Web, e-mail, or IM without your explicit approval.
The only unfortunate side effect of all this coverage seems to be the program's footprint. With antispam filters and real-time protection enabled, several Trend Micro processes each use more than 25MB of memory. The installation of the trial is also a bit dodgy, as the default selection creates two directories within Trend Micro's program folders, and the program inserts itself into your start-up menu with no obvious method of removing it. Though the trial seems to be a continuing work in progress, we can't complain about the PC protection it provides.
