Tired of that old cell phone ring? It might be time to make yourself a Radiohead or Eminem ring tone. ToneThis is one of several software packages that offer the ability to make ring tones (or the higher-quality true tones) out of MP3 files or CDs in your own collection, and put them on your phone. The software itself is easy to install and operate, allowing a user to choose a small segment of a song to use as the phone ring, or to pick an image on a computer to use as the cell phone's wallpaper. Once selected, the ring tone or image is uploaded to the cell phone carrier, and then downloaded to the phone itself, making it a good fit for people who can't connect their phones to their PCs. We would have liked to see a few more features, such as the ability to edit or adjust the audio files or pictures. The trial limitations also are very strict, allowing you to test just one audio or picture file. The software works only with a specific list of cell phone carriers, in a limited number of countries, and with a limited number of phone models, so make sure your phone is supported before launching it. However, ToneThis can be a simple way for nonexperts to make their own ring tones. Watch the CNET video review of ToneThis:

Pros: free
Cons: a whole variety of sound formats they don't support.
A ton of ads in the free version.
Tried to contact their customer support but no answer.

Pros: None.
Cons: I couldn't get it to function properly. I haven't been able to get a single ringtone converter program on this site to function properly. Either they don't support mp3 or they're full of spyware and trojans. You're safer spending $15 to $20 and buying something with a guarantee that you can take back to the store if it doesn't work, or at least get some customer support from the manufacturer.
