Publisher's description

From Rampart Software Development :

Now you can read the poster boy for twentieth-century alienation and disoriented anxiety Franz Kafka in The Kafka Collection including "The Metamorphosis" and "The Trial". In "The Metamorphosis" a young man, Gregor Samsa, awakens one morning to find that he has turned into a giant cockroach. His parents and boss are repulsed by his appearance, only his sister Grete feeds and cares for him. In a fit of rage, his father deals him a deep and crippling wound. Hobbled and neglected, Gregor begins to waste away in his room, until one night, moved by the beauty of his sister's violin playing, Gregor creeps out of his room and this time, even Grete insists that the family abandon him. Gregor slinks back into his room and dies that night. In "The Trial", an ambitious and worldly young bank clerk, Joseph K. is arrested one morning even though he has done nothing wrong. At first indignant and outraged, K. soon resigns himself to struggle with the invisible Law and the untouchable Court. Exactly one year after his arrest, K. is taken to a quarry outside of town and executed. An apple thrown without much force glanced against Gregor's back and slid off without doing any harm. Another one however, immediately following it, hit squarely and lodged in his back; Gregor wanted to drag himself away, as if he could remove the surprising, the incredible pain by changing his position; but he felt as if nailed to the spot and spread himself out, all his senses in confusion. The Metamorphosis Franz KafkaFranz Kafka was born in 1883 into a Jewish family living in Prague Czechoslovakia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Kafka took a law degree and worked for a government-sponsored insurance agency, but he spent all his free time attending literary lectures and meeting other intellectuals of the period. In 1912, in one evening, he wrote his first work, "The Judgment", and followed that with "The Metamorphosis", "The Trial", "The Castle" and "Amerika." Kafka lived and wrote in his parents' home for most of his life, and it was his bitter relationship with his upwardly-mobile and harsh father that dominated his life. While Kafka died of tuberculosis in 1924 at the age of 41, his works, published mostly after his death, were seen as eerily prescient of the Nazi regime to come and lent the word "kafkaesque" to hundreds of languages. Kafka's three sisters and fianc were all killed in concentration camps. To read The Kafka Collection on your Pocket PC, you must first have Microsoft Reader installed.
