Editors' review

The Guardian Eyewitness is a free app for viewing striking, memorable photographs--with a new one added each day--from The Guardian newspaper.

Each Guardian Eyewitness photograph also appears in the center spread of the print edition of The Guardian (and on its Web site), and the images come from all over the world--from a refugee clinic in Darfur to a panda pen in China to a gang shootout in Rio de Janeiro. According to the developers behind the app (and we're inclined to agree), each photo "isn't just another news photograph," but rather a complex, visually extraordinary image that's worth pausing to study--and which a lot of work and expertise went into. Fittingly, each image is accompanied by both a news caption and a "pro tip," a short comment or bit of advice from a photographer regarding the image's composition, characteristics, or technical details. The app has a pleasantly intuitive interface: you can simply flip through the images one at a time with a slide of your finger (you start with the last 100 images, and a new one is added each day), or you can start a slideshow or browse through a scrolling thumbnail gallery by date. You can also tag photos as favorites (and then browse just your favorites), and you can also easily share an image via e-mail, Twitter, or Facebook. A single tap summons or dismisses the app's interface, photo caption or tip, and a small sponsor logo, so it's easy to enjoy an image completely uncluttered, framed just by the borders of the iPad.

With its pro tips, the Guardian Eyewitness will be of special interest to photographers--but anyone can enjoy this excellent use of the iPad's vivid display.
