Editors' Review

+
The volunteer developers of The GIMP have been working hard to develop a polished, user-friendly, and freely distributed image editor. This application caught our attention--and hearts--as one of the most powerful general-purpose image editors around. The application's features include channels; layers and masks; filters and effects; tabbed palettes; editable text tools; and color operations such as levels. The application provides professional tools that can stand against the big boys without the hefty price tag. The only downside to this otherwise flawless program is the installation process. As it stands now, you have to install the GTX Runtime Environment and The GIMP separately. Once installed, though, the program is extremely powerful and easy to work with. The GIMP is ideal for amateur photographers, Web designers, and anyone who wants to create and edit professional-quality digital images on a budget.

"Best free editor. Period."

January 26, 2007  |  By r0llinlacs

 |  Version: The GIMP 2.2.11

Pros

Everything. Its free-ness. Its depth and photo quality is awesome. Noteable features include; I-warp: a very fun tool which allows you to move/grow/shrink portions (large or small) of the photo. Unsharp Mask: adds depth in my opinion. Brings out reflections on chrome/shiny objects

Cons

First off, the name. Gimp? One other thing, it would give me an error everytime I tried to add text to the picture. Glitch?

"Most powerful freeware image editor"

January 16, 2007  |  By Ghost_ARCHER

 |  Version: The GIMP 2.2.11

Pros

Provide as much as you can expected from a freeware. Relative small in size if ignore the installation of the GTK

Cons

I hate the idea in the interface. Switching between component windows as different programs is painful.

The installation is a little slow and so did the start up.

"Best photo-editing software"

January 06, 2007  |  By Sockpuppet

 |  Version: The GIMP 2.2.11

Pros

This is the most comprehensive photo-editing software that you can get at the price of $0. As an amateur there is no reason to buy Photoshop. Photoshop CS2 costs $650, yet GIMP has many if not most of the features of Photoshop CS2. It is also far more stable than the bulky photoshop on an economy computer. You can get Photoshop CS2 for free, but unless its a demo version it is most likely illegal unlike GIMP.

Cons

The cons really are not important for an amateur. It can't convert to CMYK or edit/run RAW images. If you don't know what CMYK or RAW is, then this really is not going to be a problem for you. The only minor issues that an amatuer can have problems with GIMP are its interface that is uncomfortable for Windows users and you have to download and install GNT first. But you can get used to the inerface and the GNT download/installation takes a few minutes. If you are not a professional I think you can overlook these failings when you look at the wonderful price tag.

"Hell,it's so dang advanced!!"

January 03, 2007  |  By Jotts

 |  Version: The GIMP 2.2.11

Pros

You can put loads of effects, grab stuff, write on your pic,but I especially like the box filling tool. You can put a high detail picture, drawing.etc and fill the whole box. Loads more. Remember people. IT'S FREEWARE.

Cons

The bad thing is, it's so complicated, that if you are new in the 'area' you have to start off with Microsoft Paint before you use GIMP! Not recommended for begginers. However, the GIMP, has a number of better tools(still has millions!) than that program Adobe recently released, which looks like a clone of GIMP. I also don't like the help on it. You better buy a book or read the HUGE GIMP GUIDE ON THE WEBSITE WHICH IS 24 CHAPTERS!!

However, this program perfectly fits you if you have:

Experience in design 3 months+

Have already used manuals for similar programs(not 3D or CAD)

AND YOU ARE SET!

"expert program!"

December 05, 2006  |  By playtom

 |  Version: The GIMP 2.2.11

Pros

if your thinking about spend hundred bucks on photoshop or need professional image editing software, try this program!it has over hundreds of professional pre-set effect you can apply to your images. tons of tools you can get only in the best product such as photoshop. don't underestimate the power of this program, you can make professional photos in just minutes, it is far the best and powerful image editing software. and its free too!

Cons

for novice to average computer users, it take least few hours to learn the most of the program, since the interface isn't far the simplest and bit more confusing than photoshop. and installing gtk can be little bit annoying but its not a big problem.

"Elements... But for Free!"

November 18, 2006  |  By nk24

 |  Version: The GIMP 2.2.11

Pros

The Gimp is a very useful program, if you are making a smaller scale project. Don't buy Photoshop Elements if you need something small done

Cons

Installation process takes a little while, but other than that, no cons to report

"Needs work."

November 11, 2006  |  By jono-san

 |  Version: The GIMP 2.2.11

Pros

It's true. It does have a lot of features included in photoshop and other professional graphics editing suites. And it's free.

Cons

While it does have a lot of the features of photoshop, it lacks some vital ones (such as postscript font support). I've found it to be severely unstable (eg, it freezes for about 5min on startup and has a habit of crashing when I try to use the text tool), and it's about as user-friendly as a charging rhinoceros. In terms of panel layout, keyboard shortcuts etc, it simply doesn't follow the conventions set and followed by companies like Adobe. Plus installing the GTK running environment as well as the program (and the help file) is way too much to expect for the average home user.
