The volunteer developers of The GIMP have been working hard to develop a polished, user-friendly, and freely distributed image editor. This application caught our attention--and hearts--as one of the most powerful general-purpose image editors around. The application's features include channels; layers and masks; filters and effects; tabbed palettes; editable text tools; and color operations such as levels. The application provides professional tools that can stand against the big boys without the hefty price tag. The only downside to this otherwise flawless program is the installation process. As it stands now, you have to install the GTX Runtime Environment and The GIMP separately. Once installed, though, the program is extremely powerful and easy to work with. The GIMP is ideal for amateur photographers, Web designers, and anyone who wants to create and edit professional-quality digital images on a budget.Publisher's description
From Gimp :GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition, and image authoring. It is a powerful piece of software with capabilities not found in any other free software product. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert-quality photo-retouching program, an online batch-processing system, a mass production image renderer, or an image-format converter. GIMP is modular, expandable, and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image-manipulation procedures to be easily scripted. Version 2.2.8 is a bug-fixing release.
Note: You will need to download both GTK+ Runtime Environment and The Gimp installers. Install GTK+ before installing The Gimp.

"Cant Believe this High Quality Software is Free"
Pros: I have been Looking for this type of program for months, and i really thought I was going to have to Buy the Extortional Photoshop.
From what i can see, this software is Basically a Free Version of Photoshop. I am blown away!
You can edit, manipulate, create and add stunning effects to your digital images, and create your own graphics for your website. Quite simply Wonderful.
Also it uses up less system resources than photoshop and loads very quickly! Five stars from me

Version: The GIMP 2.2.10
"Excellent product for image processing students and professionals"
Pros: I have just started digital image processing course in university. I tried everything from Photoimpact to photoshop elements but none of the tools suited my needs. Either they are for novice users hiding all the details, or they are 500MB beasts that are intended for graphics development. Then I revisited my buddy GIMP and found everything I needed was right there. Applying masks, convolution, histogram, thresholding and everything else my teacher tries to bore us with everyday is available for practical use. And above all its free. What else can a DIP student ask for?
Cons: Th einterface is one thing GIMP has been criticized over for years, but they dont seem to change it. Floating toolbars over the desktop make it clumsy, especially when you have some other applications running in the background too. GIMP has covered lot of ground in recent releases, so I hope when they release version 3, they redesign the interface because GIMP is now ready for the masses.

Version: The GIMP 2.2.10
Pros: I have Adobe photoshop installed on my computer, and in my opinion The GIMP is in every way as good as it. The only difference really is.. this is free! I ran all of my spyware and anti-virus programs after i installed it cos' i found this so hard to believe, and nothing was found. I can't recommend this programme highly enough. There's no better product i've come across for producing digital art.
Cons: None at all, you could be shot for complaining

Very satisfied with this program.
