CNET Editors' review
The volunteer developers of The GIMP have been working hard to develop a polished, user-friendly, and freely distributed image editor. This application caught our attention--and hearts--as one of the most powerful general-purpose image editors around. The application's features include channels; layers and masks; filters and effects; tabbed palettes; editable text tools; and color operations such as levels. The application provides professional tools that can stand against the big boys without the hefty price tag. The only downside to this otherwise flawless program is the installation process. As it stands now, you have to install the GTX Runtime Environment and The GIMP separately. Once installed, though, the program is extremely powerful and easy to work with. The GIMP is ideal for amateur photographers, Web designers, and anyone who wants to create and edit professional-quality digital images on a budget.Publisher's Description
From Gimp:
GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition, and image authoring. It is a powerful piece of software with capabilities not found in any other free software product. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert-quality photo-retouching program, an online batch-processing system, a mass production image renderer, or an image-format converter. GIMP is modular, expandable, and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image-manipulation procedures to be easily scripted. Version 2.2.8 is a bug-fixing release.
Note: You will need to download both GTK+ Runtime Environment and The Gimp installers. Install GTK+ before installing The Gimp.

"BEST freeware EVER. Period."
Version: The GIMP 2.2.8
Pros
Simple yet comprehensive for most applications. Beats some of the expensive photo imaging software by a mile.
Cons
Features could be a little more sophisticated, but what do you want for FREE?
-
"Great program, I use it all the time!"
Version: The GIMP 2.2.8
Pros
This is a great piece of software, it performs similar operation as Photoshop does but it is free!
Cons
Its hard to learn at first, but once you get key features it becomes easy and fun.

"The GiMP deserves a far better rating than the editor gave it."
Version: The GIMP 2.2.8
Pros
The GiMP is a fantastic alternative to the bloated and extortionately expensive Photoshop. It does basically everything Photoshop does, and also includes scripts (called Script-Fu) that make professional-looking effects easier.
Cons
It's a free product and therefore does lack some of the features that Photoshop has, but these are few and far between.

"Tricky to Install"
Version: The GIMP 2.2.8
Pros
It's on okay program for basic alterations.
Cons
Don't download it from Download.com, it's easier to download it from the main site for GIMP. They offer an installer that does it all for you.

"The best thing aside from Photoshop... for free."
Version: The GIMP 2.2.8
Pros
EXTREMELY powerful raster image editor. Nearly all the features and capabilities of Photoshop with none of the cost. Plug-ins and scripting make it extensible and customizible. Open Source, etc. Overall a wonderful, wonderful program.
Cons
The interface... needs work. Gnome doesn't look good to begin with and its implementation here leaves something to be desired. No single-window mode at all. Saving/opening dialogue takes a lot out of the hands of the user.

"Absolutely Amazing!"
Version: The GIMP 2.2.8
Pros
Does just about everything Photoshop and the rest of those expensive programs do and more! Photoshop was one of my main apps in Windows now Gimp got me using Linux. Great free plug-ins.
Cons
Windows (panels?) not always being on top of document.

"Slowed down our system too much.."
Version: The GIMP 2.2.8
Pros
Although I can't guarantee from personal experience, the features are well-touted. Looks like it would be good for people already educated in the use of similar programs.
Cons
It attached and caused every single freakin image file to load about 150 times slower on our Win98se. We had to uninstall it and are still trying to figure out some images' affiliation with which programs.

"version 2.2.9 is out"
Version: The GIMP 2.2.8
Pros
The installation of the 2.2.9 version is VERY easy (I have given the link below); however, the link on DownloadCom (as of 12DEC2005) takes you to an older version that is difficult for me to install (I am only an average computer user, and I found it possible to install; but it took some thinking).
So, I have rated the program on its newest version because it really is good.
It deserves FIVE STARS because of the easy installation and the many available features built-in GIMP.
However, I give it FOUR STARS because I am personally looking for an editor that supports 8bf (Adobe) filters and lets you apply the filters to an area of the image you select.
Cons
You have to download GIMP ToolKit and install it separately.
Refer to the link below because installing the GIMP and GTK from the provided links is &¯ber-hard (because they are the older versions, for starters).
So, there are newer versions of both programs (newer than downloadCom) at this site (just replace the [] with their contents):

"Um how do u install"
Version: The GIMP 2.2.8
Cons
no way to install

"One of the best image editing programs around!!"
Version: The GIMP 2.2.8
Pros
Ever since I discovered this product(which was some year ago), I've been extremely amazed about it. Who ever knew that some free open-source product can match up to Adobe Photoshop? Actually, for me, GIMP is better than Photoshop because of the price; ease of use; user-friendliness; and lots of other features. Really amazing. Get this now!!
Cons
The interface is really not that good. Why can't it just stay in one window, not seperate ones? It makes stuff odd. And the installer.. why can't it include the GTK+ Environment already? Anyway, besides those.. this program is the tops!
