The volunteer developers of The GIMP have been working hard to develop a polished, user-friendly, and freely distributed image editor. This application caught our attention--and hearts--as one of the most powerful general-purpose image editors around. The application's features include channels; layers and masks; filters and effects; tabbed palettes; editable text tools; and color operations such as levels. The application provides professional tools that can stand against the big boys without the hefty price tag. The only downside to this otherwise flawless program is the installation process. As it stands now, you have to install the GTX Runtime Environment and The GIMP separately. Once installed, though, the program is extremely powerful and easy to work with. The GIMP is ideal for amateur photographers, Web designers, and anyone who wants to create and edit professional-quality digital images on a budget.Publisher's description
From Gimp :GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition, and image authoring. It is a powerful piece of software with capabilities not found in any other free software product. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert-quality photo-retouching program, an online batch-processing system, a mass production image renderer, or an image-format converter. GIMP is modular, expandable, and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image-manipulation procedures to be easily scripted. Version 2.0.3 is a bug-fixing release.
Note: You will need to download both GTK+ Runtime Environment and The Gimp installers. Install GTK+ before installing The Gimp.

"It's the best, and it's free!"
Pros: The Gimp will do things that $100.00 programs can't do. With the Gimp, Irfanview and paint, all free, you will be able to do more than most folks can actually learn.

Version: The GIMP 2.2.6
Pros: About a year or two ago I downloaded PSP, and I was unhappy with it because 1) It took me forever to figure out all of the cool stuff, and 2) by the time I did, my free trial was up and it asked me to buy it. Eh, no! I'm only 14, and there is no way momma was going to pay $100!
Thank God that I found The Gimp! It took me just a few hours to figure out everything I could do... I love it!
I make layouts for a blog thing, and now they will totally rock because I can do all of these wicked things!
This is so awesome!
Cons: I can't get it to put text in there that's the right size... -_-

"Difficult for beginners but great results"
Pros: I needed an image authoring program and this one was free so I tried it. I have no experience with photoshop or any programs like that so this was a bit difficult to use. I was not used to the layering concept and still don't have a complete handle on it. However after some experimentation I did figure out how to do most of what I wanted and ended up with a really nice finished product. If you are an absolute beginner with programs like this you may find it very hard to use, otherwise with some work you can figure most things out. I have no doubt this can do many things much more expensive programs can do. Thank you to the makers of the program, I truly appreciate your hard work.
Cons: Hard to use for some.

Version: The GIMP 2.2.6
Cons: Can't give a pros for this product it sounds like it would be great to use, but everytime I tried to open a image I would get error messages and it wouldn't work even though I re-downloaded and installed it three times.
