Untitled Document Now you can enjoy the most famous dog stories of all time on your handheld with "The Dog Collection" featuring Jack London''s "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang" and "The Further Adventures of Lad" by Albert Payson Terhune. In Jack London''s "The Call of the Wild," Buck, a loyal and courageous dog, is kidnapped from his safe California home and beloved master and "sold up North" to become a sled dog in the Alaskan wilderness. As he struggles to survive his savage surroundings and its equally savage humans, he must decide whether to answer the clarion call of his wild kindred - the wolves. Jack London was born in 1876 in San Francisco, and educated himself in public libraries. He published "The Call Of The Wild" in 1903 and "White Fang" in 1906. His last years were darkened by alcoholism and London died at the age of 40 in 1916 . "White Fang" is the story of a dog/wolf hybrid who is taken from his happy life as an Indian''s sled dog, to the unimaginably cruel life of a fighting dog, and finally to a loving man who shows him the meaning of love and kindness. Jack London wrote "White Fang" as a sequel to "The Call of the Wild." "The Further Adventures of Lad," published in 1922, is the sequel to Terhune''s wildly successful "Lad, a Dog." Through his books, Terhune created a love of dogs in general and Collies in particular. He opened the eyes of thousands of children to the potential for a close, loving relationship with a dog. Albert Payson Terhune was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1872 and lived most of his life at Sunnybank, his estate on the shores of Lake Pompton. It was there that he raised the famous Collies about whom he wrote - Lad, Bruce, Wolf and Treve. Terhune died in 1942.
