TeraCopy from Code Sector is a free file-copying utility that offers more speed and security than Windows. It's a compact tool that can quickly copy or move single files or batches of files to any directory you select, but it does much more, such as automatically calculating CRC checksum values to speed up the validation process. It also skips bad files during the copying process, displaying them at the end of transfers so you can see just which ones need replacing or other attention.

TeraCopy's user interface is a pair of efficient dialogs, one an icon-based control panel that you use to add, copy, move, test, and delete files, and a second interface that pops up to do the work. After we installed TeraCopy, it opened with this second interface in minimized mode, a tiny dialog with twin file directory fields--one for source files, the other for the target folder--that double as progress bars for file transfers. Clicking More expands the interface to a multifile view for batch operations and accesses the Clean Up, Verify, and Delete controls as well as a file menu button that includes Options; you can also access this interface from the Start Menu. A drop-down menu lists recent operations with time stamps for quick retrieval. Selecting TeraCopy on a file's properties menu calls up a different, icon-based navigation and control panel. We opened this interface and used the browsing tool to add a file to copy and create a destination folder, and then clicked Copy. The operation was successful but concluded so quickly that we had to open the target folder and check the file's properties to verify that anything happened at all. We also tried the Test feature in this view, which verified an ubuntu ISO disk image in about 2 seconds. You can even associate TeraCopy with .sfv and .md5 files in its options dialog or during installation.

TeraCopy is a nifty piece of freeware that improves the copy/move function in Windows and adds useful extras like checksum calculation and permanent delete. We tried it in both Windows 7 and XP, and recommend it for all Windows users.

    "Great Utility!"

    June 11, 2014   |   By benjiroo

    Version: TeraCopy 2.3

    Pros

Integrates seamlessly with Windows file system.
Far more powerful than Windows Explorer.
Can cue from multiple source folders into one destination folder.

    Cons

Random crash / error, but not enough to warrant uninstall.
Window stays on top, but is minimizable.

    Summary

I recently had to do some shuffling of data between two 1 TB portable HDDs and my laptop HDD, because I accidentally deleted everything on one of the portables. To recover the lost HDD, I used Undelete 360 (I left a review on that, too) to transfer the recovered files to the other portable. Not enough space on the second portable, so I needed a way to make sure that the backup was good. Microsoft SyncToy could have done the job, but it doesn't seem to offer any kind of file verification (I'm no expert). TeraCopy offers CRC checking as part of the file copy process, and it works pretty well.

TeraCopy, at least the free version, doesn't seem to be 100% stable, however. Last night, I left it to copy 800 GB of recovered files from one portable HDD to another, with file verification, and woke up this morning to find it completed with zero errors. When I went to transfer the 320 GB back to the second HDD that was originally there, I kept getting errors and crashes. Odd.

Still, a great little tool, although I'm not sure if $19.95 for purchase of the full version is worth it.

"FANTASTIC PRODUCT- MILES BETTER THAN WINDOWS COPY-PASTE"

    May 22, 2014   |   By DIAMONDS99

    Version: TeraCopy 2.3

    Pros

Fast, Easy to use, User Friendly,

BIT ADVANTAGE (besides speed) - TeraCopy Tells you what is wrong if a file is skipped/not copied or moved, UNLIKE Windows- it will still copy/move everything except for the one problem file (Windows aborts the entire copy/move for the entire folder if one file is problematic, and it doesn't tell you what the problem was...e.g. if one file name is too long, Windows aborts, no explanation, TeraCopy moves/copies all of the other files and tells you which file you need to rename -so you can fix it and move/copy it!

    Cons

You need to right click on this to activate it.
Tera Copy can install & replace Windows Copy/Move but I had to disable this...it does it by default. I'd rather activate TeraCopy as I need it.

    Summary

    Fantastic product. Would definitely recommend.

    "Quick like a bunny !"

    May 06, 2014   |   By curiousgeorge13

    Version: TeraCopy 2.3

    Pros

Faster data transfer hard to quantify, BUT:
Works great and gives you more options than windows copy/move does.
Easy to use ... hides in background untill needed
Shows progress / speed of data transfer /
Choice of : copy or move Single file or batch...
replace only older files, overwrite file/batch, rename file/batch,etc...
Options to watch each one, with CRC check as it progresses.
Tinkerbell sound when finished - nice touch.

    Cons

None so far after 3 months of heavy use.

    Summary

Useful tool to add to Windows.
Ten steps better than Windows version -
Like Piriform Defraggler, Auslogics Defrag or Perfect Disk are
    to semi-useless Windows Defrag.

"TeraCopy = Simply The Best = AWESOME!"

    May 02, 2014   |   By LionHeartUK

    Version: TeraCopy 2.3

    Pros

I am using the TeraCopy pro version v.2.3, and was able to move all my 382 GB of my valuable files from one external hard drive to the another one, and with absolutely no problems at all. And unlike the windows built in copy, which always gives you error messages, this software gives no error messages, and is very reliable, smooth, simple to use, and FAST!

The software is a real God send for me, and is now my all time favourite software, and worth every single penny, and I just love it.

Yabba Dabba Dooo! And Thank youuu!

    Cons

    No cons for me.

"Already, "How did I ever do without this?" the 1st day!"

    January 31, 2014   |   By Bozobub

    Version: TeraCopy 2.3

    Pros

As the previous reviewer notes, does exactly what it says it will do, including very good integration with Windows.

    Cons

Not *quite* as fast as some other 3rd-party free copy utilities I've tried, although still MUCH faster (15-30%, from my experience) than the standard Windows dialog nonetheless.

    Summary

While (as noted above) some 3rd-party programs are a bit faster, none of them offer the combination of very tight Windows integration, excellent UI, and useful utilities (such as file verification) that TeraCopy does. I literally could not be more satisfied, especially with free software!
