TeamViewer is an excellent screen-sharing and file-transfer app that can be used to facilitate business collaborations as well as helping distraught relatives diagnose and cure computer problems. Along with being free for noncorporate use, it gives users precisely the tools they need to share screens securely, send files with a minimum of hassle, control access rights, and even flip which user has control.
The options available while you're in control work smoothly. You can maximize the pane that the other computer's screen is visible in, as well as utilize several smart options from a drop-down toolbar in the center of the window. Like the ability to launch using Windows ID credentials and reset computer remotely (while still being able to control it once the computer is back on)
Cons
The "Partner" computer concept and the associated login IDs are somewhat confusing; it's not immediately obvious when I need to type the Username/Password of the current computer or the one I'm trying to control remotely.

1. Don't understand VPN concept, but it seems like a good idea to set up most reliable connection; so I'm (needlessly?) going for a VPN connection and *then* for Remote Control. Guess what I'm trying to say is, for me, a more detailed, very accessible Help section would be nice
2. Dislike my #1 dislike; mostly because I haven't tried very hard to go through the Help section; the #1 dislike, though it *may* be valid, is most likely pure laziness on my part. Everything else about the software is very intuitive and, oh yeah, it's free (for personal use, anyway)!
Bottom line: Highly recommend download. It's been about 4 years ago, but I had a GoToMyPC subscription and paid quite a bit for it. This is free. I haven't compared other remote PC access programs, so can't say how it stacks up against them. However, I am certain Teamviewer will meet your needs. -

Very useful not only when away from home, but to control a computer next door. Allows to run programs, copy files, call downloads... everything one does on one's own computer. Help service is prompt to answer and willing to help.
Cons
Had a few difficulties installing it. Realized too late that with Window XP pro one has first to activate "Remote Desktop" in Windows.

Just get it if you have more than one computer, but don't use it to spy on what your wife is doing at her computer. She will know you are watching !

1. It works. I've only used it for demonstration (that is, I haven't really needed it), but I did it with two different computers with two different ISPs, and the remote users were two different senior citizens. I installed it on the computers and showed them where the teamviewer icon is and then I later called them and had them start it up and tell me the numbers that are displayed, and I was connected and could do stuff on their computers remotely. Just like it's supposed to do. This should make things a lot easier when one of them calls with a problem suited for this sort of thing.
