- "A tune-up for your PC"
- Version reviewed: System Mechanic 7.1.7
As with any machine, your PC needs regular tune-ups to maintain peak performance. This virtual toolbox can enhance the speed, safety, and power of your computer with a wide range of functions and an extensive help system.
System Mechanic performs cleanup, optimization, and privacy protection with equal agility. As with similar tune-up utilities, it enables you to clean up your registry, remove junk files, and customize hidden settings to improve performance. The app has additional tools for removing spyware and for defragmenting your hard drive, eliminating the need for multiple utility programs. There is an undo function that restores your system to its previous state, but its hidden in the SafetyNet tab and doesn't allow you to bring back one item at a time. The program also lacks a system profiler.
The bottom line, however, is that System Mechanic is one of the most complete, effective, and easy-to-use tune-up utilities we've seen to date.

Version: System Mechanic 7.1.7
"This Mechanic Should Go Back to School"
Pros: I can not in good conscience recommend this version of System Mechanic to anyone.
Cons: This program is flawed, that is the nicest way I can think to put it. Certain features such as the defragmenter simply quit working, the program freezes at various times, and support from Iolo for these problems is non-existent. This program should have a beta in the title, because it works like one. (Alpha might even be more appropriate.) If you need a version, get 6. Iolo can't seem to get it right. Stick to TuneUp Utilities to keep your PC smoothly running.

Version: System Mechanic 7.1.7
Pros: recover RAM feature
Cons: Version 6 was great. Bought version 7 to replace it on our office computers. On each machine, it had from mild to serious glitches. Drive Scrubber crashed on one machine. Main window loads but instantly freezes on two others. Firewall & AV report log-in errors every reboot on another machine. Main window sometimes works, sometimes freezes on two others. It will not uninstall. Leaves files & registry entries galore. ZERO TECH SUPPORT!! E-mailed them half dozen times, have yet to get anything beyond automated replies which didn't even come near to mentioning any of the problems. NOTHING BUT FRUSTRATION!! DO *NOT* BUY THIS PRODUCT!!! DO NOT INSTALL ANY FREE *TRIAL* VERSIONS OF THIS PRODUCT!! I'd like to use various profanities to describe it, but then couldn't post this warning. Buyer Beware!!

Version: System Mechanic 7.1.7
Pros: I would like to come up with something positive to say about version 7 but in all honesty I can't. If there was a rating below 1 I would have used it.
Cons: i was a version 6 user and was extremely happy with it. When it was time to renew my license I went to the latest version. This software crashed my system, and even caused my Zone Alarm Security Suite to crash. As to tech support this was rediculous. I sent them several emails and got computer generated responses about their product. In summary don't waste your money and don't waste your time. i am not sure why Download.com even has it listed on their website it is so BAD!!

Version: System Mechanic 7.1.7
Pros: Decided to try it based on the large number of downloads. But ...
Cons: I have downloaded this program even though all the users ratings are very poor for it. Well I should have listened to the other users. This is a very bad utility. It has bugs everywhere and seems to crash more than it works. The screens are also way too cluttered and hard for me to use. I will stick to my WinCleaner oneclick. It does what I need.

Version: System Mechanic 7.1.7
Pros: I liked the ease of customizing certain aspects of windows. The layout was also visually appealing.
Cons: Everything. Way too many bugs. The program constantly locks up, even just after starting it. Customer service is WRETCHED! No human response at all. The firewall seems like it should be good, but is entirely too buggy. Even after this update, Skype and other IM clients fail to work (even after you set exceptions for them). Version 6 was 100 times better.
