CNET Editors' review
As with any machine, your PC needs regular tune-ups to maintain peak performance. This virtual toolbox can enhance the speed, safety, and power of your computer with a wide range of functions and an extensive help system.
System Mechanic performs cleanup, optimization, and privacy protection with equal agility. As with similar tune-up utilities, it enables you to clean up your registry, remove junk files, and customize hidden settings to improve performance. Novice users can get all of that done at once or automatically taken care of via the software's ActiveCare feature. The app has additional tools for removing spyware and for defragmenting your hard drive, eliminating the need for multiple utility programs. For example, the Configure Windows Startup tool shows the list of applications and services that automatically start with the computer and allows for disabling or removing them individually. This is a handy tool that replaces the "Software Explorer" part that Microsoft has taken out of the Windows Defender in Windows 7. The program is 32-bit, but it will work with Windows 7 64-bit.
There is an undo function that restores your system to its previous state, but it's hidden in the SafetyNet tab and doesn't allow you to bring back one item at a time. The program also lacks a system profiler, and has problems recognizing some antivirus programs such as AVG and ZoneAlarm. Also, when you do a "Deep System analysis," which can take a while, the process can't be canceled. These problems aside, System Mechanic is one of the most complete, effective, and easy-to-use tune-up utilities we've seen to date.

"Bad Bad Bad"
Version: System Mechanic Free 10.8.5
Pros
When it worked, it worked great. It will corrupt your machine, you just haven't found out yet...
Cons
I use to love it until it destroyed windows installer in laptop running Vista, destroyed bluetooth and poor customer service. I didn't have any problems with my desktop running windows 7, but now since the latest update 8/3/12, my desktop is acting up. I used to love the product, but now I don't think ANYONE should buy or download. I am a paid subscriber who is paid up til 2016, that's how much I liked the product...
Summary
Do Not Buy or Download until they fix very known issues and improve customer service...

"System Mechanic and Windows Installer Problem"
Version: System Mechanic Free 10.8.5
Pros
System Mechanic use to be a very good application..
Cons
System Mechanic will corrupt Windows Installer. SM tech support knows about the problem but give poor support.
Summary
I recommend that System Mechanic should not be run until SM tech support fixes the problem. Before buying or using go to a Google search and enter "iolo microsoft installer".

"Was good, went bad and is now excellent"
Version: System Mechanic Free 10.8.5
Pros
I have been using System Mechanic since SM6. That was great so I upgraded to SM7 which was a disaster, so I reverted to SM6. SM8 delivered all that SM7 had promised but failed to deliver. Every release since has been better and works. I have nearly all parts running automatically so I can almost forget it.
Cons
It slows down boot up, but I do have it set up to update at boot up for security reasons, so I can bear that.
If you have been away from your PC for a (user definable) interval, the background services start and are slow to end.
Their pricing is strange.Summary
If you download the free trial you do get the full system. When the trial is over they send you an account for a twelve month subscription to the the system. If you don't pay , they send you a special half-price offer. NEVER PAY THE FULL PRICE. You will always get a great discount offer.
In any case I believe that the recent builds are worth the full price. -

"Was a great product, now dangerous!"
Version: System Mechanic Free 10.8.5
Pros
Worked well for five years, doing everything it says
Cons
Without warning the latest version of System Mechanic corrupted the registry entries for the windows installer service on my PC, so nothing would install, including regular Windows security updates. Makes the machine less safe and stable and no fix supplied or warning given.
Summary
I wish I'd read the reviews already posted a month ago. I've had the same experience, without warning the latest version of System Mechanic corrupted the registry entries for the windows installer service on my PC, so nothing would install, including regular Windows security updates. I've had to restore/rebuild my PC three times now and have taken SM off my PC. I guess they think because there aren't so many Vista users now its not important to fix, but there's no warning of problems on the site and the fix I was given didn't work. This shows a lack of basic quality control and process integrity which will affect other aspects of the program in future. Shame, it was a terrific product.

"It ripped out my installer"
Version: System Mechanic Free 10.8.5
Pros
I used System Mechanic for several years and generally really like it. I've used it On multiple computers. it seemed very solid, comprehensive, and safe. Not any more.
Cons
Some months ago, the MAPI server connections to Outlook began failing. Only a repair to MS Officer would bring it back. I learned it was a registry goof on the part of System Mechanic and I had to do a manual block in SM not to blow the registry key away. Not good. I think it got fixed in an update. In recent weeks, I have had the same experience of having the MS Installer partly deleted, registry keys removed, completely crippled. Outrageous. Forum postings immediately showed this to be a System Mechanic issue. I removed System Mechanic from my system and spent hours over several days researching a fix, which I eventually did find thank God. I do have backups but the idea of a full image reinstall made me ill.
Summary
This used to be a wonderful program. Now it sucks. Don't use it. If it is true that the company is not taking responsibility, remember Tylenol? My subscription runs another six months, so I could change my mind but it won't be easy. Not with screwing up my MAPI services and then blowing the MS installer away. No way.

"FLAWED; SM erases the M/S installer"
Version: System Mechanic Free 10.8.5
Pros
cheap and it says it can do wonderous things
Cons
Garbage software- used to be good Their engineers don't seem to care.If you think you can get by w/o system installer- fine. The only solution is to do a complete reinstall, which, of course is painful.
Summary
Don't buy it, and do not try their registry suggestions or you will end up with zero. If your installer works, uninstall as quickly as possible.
Well the SM CSR people said they fixed the major problem that corrupted the registry entry for ms/Installer, and provided me with the link for SMPro 11; I downloaded it and was about to install it when I noticed it was the old 10.5.8 version- the one that DOES DAMAGE! So, I told them, and they said there was a problem with the new 11 version, and would "let me know". In other words they have no idea what's wrong, how to fix it and then attempt to mislead you. I ma trying to get my money back-good luck, eh? DO NOT USE SYSTEM MECHANIC UNLESS YOU WANT MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH YOUR PC!!

"Good, but deeply flawed"
Version: System Mechanic Free 10.8.5
Pros
For a long time I loved this program. It fixed a number of issues, but you had to be careful on fuill auto as it would do thgins like clear yuor trash- and when you went to look for something there....
Cons
MAJOR PROBLEM - apparently, with Visrta SP 2 it KILLS your Microsoft installer package. After days of work I finally got them to admit this, and none of the fixes found on line will work. This means I have to REBUILD EVERY FRIGGING VISTA MACHINE I used this on. They don;t even really seem to be sorry about it and say "oh, well, we'll deal with it in a future build, sometime. Maybe"
Summary
3 months ago I would have said it was a good program. Now I hate it! and hate how the company has been treating meYou'd think with a major issue liek this they would immediatly sic a pile of top engineers on a fix for ttheir poor customers, but no. The best they can do is suggest a full install, then manually exclude the MSI registery keys from their program. SHAME SHAME SHAME!
