CNET Editors' review
This straightforward backup utility makes it a snap to safeguard and synchronize your files, and its freeware price just sweetens the deal. Surprisingly flexible for a free program, SyncBack can save your files anywhere: on external hard drives, in ZIP archives, on network drives, on CDs (using UDF), or transfer them via FTP. Recovering from a drive loss is also cinch, with a convenient restore tool that replicates folder trees along with the files in them.
It lets you define multiple scheduled backup jobs so you can just set 'em and forget 'em, allowing users to create specific backup jobs for certain folders or file types. You can control the way files are compared and selected for backup: the program comes with ready-made profiles to make the process as easy as possible. It's hard not to like that SyncBack doesn't use many system resources when working in the background, and backups can be set to export their logs to an HTML file for easy viewing. All in all, it's an excellent choice for home users and small businesses.
Publisher's Description
From 2BrightSparks:
SyncBackFree can process filenames in any language and unlimited filename lengths, and you'll enjoy tremendous flexibility of how you select which files and folders to include in your backup. The program allows you to easily see what was copied and what was not with its straight forward reporting. With compression, FTP and much more, SyncBackFree also includes an extensive help file.
SyncBackFree is designed for and tested on all versions of Windows, from XP to the latest Windows 8 (although it is not designed to work on server versions of Windows) and shares the same easy to use interface as its more powerful namesakes SyncBackSE and SyncBackPro. If your backup requirements are demanding then you can safely have SyncBackFree, SyncBackSE, and SyncBackPro all installed at the same time on the same computer to discover what solution best suits your needs.

"A Reliable, Rock Solid, GIT-R-DUN Program"
Version: SyncBackFree 6.2.30.0
Pros
A somewhat computer savvy user can download, install and have it working on the most common backup tasks in a few minutes. More complex tasks require greater understanding of the settings, as should be expected. (You should know who you are by now.)
Cons
None I have ever found, and I've been using SyncBackFree for a very long time.

"Very Bad! Destination is not identical to the source!"
Version: SyncBackFree 6.2.30.0
Pros
free highly configurable
Cons
Very bad! I just test it the destination directory is not identical to the source directory! Just go and see in property of each folder and see a big difference
Summary
I much prefer Rapidusb Backup

"Better than any other 'free' I've used before"
Version: SyncBackFree 6.2.30.0
Pros
Very flexible setup of backup 'profiles'. Simulated run feature is excellent - allows you to check what happens. Scheduler is great - runs on time. Group profile allows you to run a set of profiles as one backup
Cons
Annoying that a profile has to be setup with some basic details (3) before you get a separate dialogue to select Source and Destination folders and whether to schedule the profile. Asks for Windows password for scheduled runs - naughty, especially as no way to check if this is passed on in anyway ! Has feature to turn password requirement off for scheduling - this is worrying if it does this in the wrong way (too 'scared' to 'see what happens' with this feature). Group profiles confusing at first - should really ask when a standard profile has been completed whether it should go into a group. Should be able to click on a profile and add it to an existing group (rather than only being able to open a group and then add a profile).
Summary
Excellent piece of software, spoiled by some annoyances , a few (password/security-related) of which should be dropped by the Author asap or re-though thoroughly and implemented differenly !

"Brilliant utility"
Version: SyncBackFree 6.2.30.0
Pros
I have been using version 3 for years and just upgraded to 6. A good product is now better. It copied files with long names that the older version couldn't and the log is presented in a much more usable way.
Cons
None that I can see in Version 6.

"Free no good"
Version: SyncBackFree 6.2.30.0
Pros
Don't know. Wasn't able to use it due to formatting error
Cons
I downloaded the free version to see if I would be interested. When I tried to back-up a software file, it would't do it because the CD must be formatted to UDF. Posted a question in SyncBack forum. Was told that only the Pro version will back-up to CDs that haven't been formatted to UDF. Used the link they provided to sites that would re-format to UDF but was told if there were additional downloads included, I was "on my own". Spent 3 days search web and cannot find any place(that I trust) to download the software to re-format my discs. And, the Pro version is too expensive for me, being on a very limited budget
Summary
SyncBack might be a good program, but to use the free version as a means of "switching and baiting" by using the UDF formatting to keep anyone from being able to back-up anything.
Won't buy it and will not recommend to anyone. -
"Solid product and upgrade"
Version: SyncBackFree 6.2.30.0
Pros
The upgrade process is relatively seamless. You may have to redo the schedule, but that is not a bad deal.
The interface is straightforward (although this version is different than the other versions).
It works with large USB 3.0 drives, which the built in Windows 7 backup does not work with (all of them). Of course that is doing an image backup also.Cons
The upgrade process will not preserve some things, such as if you have compression settings and passwords and it does not know the location of your previous version of syncback for copying some of the profiles (strange).
It depends on Windows concept of file ownership and such in a strange way. For instance, my login has full admin privileges, but at one time I moved my C drive to a D drive and windows views the files as "owned" by a different user. As an admin I can do anything with those files, but the program chokes on some of those as being locked and owned by someone else. Not a huge deal, but causes a big error report and I then went to the trouble of changing ownership on all the files.Summary
For a free program, this is hard to beat. I would love to see (even for the paid version) a variety of features focused on CLOUD backup and synchronizing. Without going into a full product manager description, the fact that Dropbox and Skydrive both require their own folder makes them hard to use in some ways. I would like to see interesting methods of synchronizing to the cloud from multiple computers that allows the preservation of a normal directory structure. I would even pay for it, if it were done right. For now I do some tricks with this program that work, but is not drag and drop easy.
