Surf It

Sometimes change is good, and switching over to Surf It may be good in making you better appreciate your current browser. Surf It isn't particularly bad, and it has some good points, but the overall impression is clunky. The interface itself, with its cartoonish icons and overlarge progress-tracking bar, appears amateurishly designed. Downloading and installing were a bit slow, as several add-ons are packaged with the browser but must install as separate elements within the setup process.

Opening new pages, even going back to reload a cached page, was sometimes slow. And when we clicked a dialog box to close, it didn't actually exit, but simply moved to the background of the open windows. On the other hand, we liked that we could open and keep separate our Favorites from IE and Netscape, and still use them, while building a Favorites list just for Surf It. And importing Favorites from those browsers to Surf It went quickly and smoothly, as did using Surf It's FTP client. But pop-ups were blocked inconsistently at some sites, which suggests the browsers filter is a bit spotty.

On the whole, this free tool isn't a bad browser, but its competition is far better.
