SugarSync Desktop offers a complete, but sufficiently compact desktop manager for viewing and arranging the multimedia files that will be stored online as part of the SugarSync service to be retrieved via the SugarSync client on a Mac, other Windows laptops, a BlackBerry or Windows Mobile phone, or from your personal Web address from any other Web-friendly device.

SugarSync gets high ratings for its ease of use, reliability, and above all, its speed. There are nice extra features, like the Magic Briefcase that house on all platforms and devices the content you drop into it, and a quick link to your personal Web site. A search field would not go amiss, especially if you're not certain of your file's location and haven't had the foresight to include your file into the briefcase. Despite that, this service makes mincemeat of many competitors in the remote access space for its ability to monitor multiple computers and platforms with little fuss.

"Not Reliable"

June 16, 2010  |  By ragchewer

 |  Version: SugarSync Manager 1.1.8

Pros

Concept- Great Idea

Cons

For sedond time in a year I am out of town, need a file and it is not backed up in Magic Briefcase nor in a backup folder with all Magic Briefcase docs even though SugarSync says all files are synced.

Summary

DO NOT TRUST SugarSync to be automatically backing up your files online. Do not bet your business that data will be backed up if you lose a drive or the place burns down or gets flooded. Do not bet your business you can log onto SugarSync to get an urgently needed critical file. Tech support's solution is once again, go back to the office and uninstall and reinstall on all machines and wait and wait for the backuped files database to rebuild- a lot of good that does me from 1800+ miles away today when I need something that didn't automatically back up in Magic Briefcase not the backup folder my server maintains flawlessly on itself.

"WARNING DO NOT USE SUGARSYNC! lost all of my data !"

March 26, 2010  |  By jayjones911411

 |  Version: SugarSync Manager 1.1.8

Pros

LOST ALL OF MY DATA and they cant find it.
Horrible customer service
Sugarsync does not care about small business

Cons

LOST ALL OF MY DATA and they cant find it.
Horrible customer service
Sugarsync does not care about small business

Summary

WARNING DO NOT USE SUGARSYNC! SUGARSYNC lost all of my data and could not retrieve it from their own server. This company is a joke, they held my company hostage for 2 weeks trying to find my files that Sugarsync some how deleted from my desktop! Their horribly inept techs could not figure out where my data went so they just decided not to call me back. I finally got in touch with Debbie, Sr. Director, SugarSync Customer Care and she tried to make me feel stupid and that the whole thing was my fault. Sugarsync does not care about small businesses and their customer service is horrible.

"Perfect for teachers who like to take their work home!"

October 06, 2009  |  By mcDouggie

 |  Version: SugarSync Manager 1.1.8

Pros

It automatically updates the file on any other computer where the same file is found. This keeps me from making several sloppy copies of what should be a finished product. Also, I never have to race back home to grab the flash drive I forgot.

Cons

With the free setup, there's very little room for fun stuff. Music and pictures just won't fit, or they take too long to load.

Summary

As a teacher, I can't count how many times I've had to e-mail something to myself because I can't find my flash drive, or because I've left it in a school computer. With sugarsync, I never worry about if I have the file. I always use either my home computer, or the school's, so it's always backed up.

Also, I have a bad habit of forgetting which file is truly the version of "Chapter 2 Test". Is it the one on my home computer? Is it the one on my school computer? Or is my only copy on the flash drive that got stolen by some punk kid last week? These questions no longer apply since it automatically syncs up with any existing version of the same file.

Finally, I can't count how many times I've been at a friend's house and wanted to show them something I whipped up at home. This spontaneity could never work unless I carried several flash drives around with me everywhere I go. (Which I used to do.)

The only problem I've had was initially loading it up at school. The school computers are a little hesitant to trust any type of remote access program.

"A few hiccups, but still excellent"

September 30, 2009  |  By RJCWriter

 |  Version: SugarSync Manager 1.1.8

Pros

free base plan, works with my Storm and multiple computers, can access your files via the web without having the manager installed,(pc must have appropriate file viewer though)

Cons

servers occasionally go down, upload speeds aren't the fastest on the free plan,

Summary

for the price, it doesn't get much better than this. Works great for syncing my word documents across my pcs/phones.

"Great way to backup and sync multiple computers."

September 09, 2009  |  By vbuckjr

 |  Version: SugarSync Manager 1.1.8

Pros

Able to sync MAC, XP, and VIsta computers able to access important documents no matter what system I am using. Creates backups in the cloud and able to access documents in the cloud from the sugarsync portal as well.

Cons

Haven't had any problems, haven't tried the blackberry piece.

Summary

Think it is the best online backup sync product I have tried the only one I was willing to pay for. Used it mostly so I could sync multiple computers so I would work in windows or Mac when ever I want and have access to documents on both. Nice side effect is that I have an offsite backup as well as a backup on each computer I am syncing.

"did nothing on blackberry, did not sync photos"

July 27, 2009  |  By james148654610316814

 |  Version: SugarSync Manager 1.1.8

Pros

it sounds like a great idea

Cons

doesn't work. Did nothing on blackberry. You'd run it and it would just sit there saying "Loading". Never uploaded one photo. Completely worthless. I contacted support for help and got no response.

Summary

doesn't work. Did nothing on blackberry. You'd run it and it would just sit there saying "Loading" for everything. Never uploaded one photo. Completely worthless. I contacted support for help and got no response. software does not work the way the advertisers claim. If you want to view items from your PC I would suggest Orb. Doesn't upload or backup unfortunately, there's a client that has to be on your PC and your PC must be on, but at least you can view it from any browser quickly, including iphones and blackberries.

"Failed to recover backed up files"

July 22, 2009  |  By CharlieSudbury

 |  Version: SugarSync Manager 1.1.8

Pros

Very easy to use. Backs up fine.

Cons

Data recovery doesn't work and customer service is unacceptably slow.

Summary

I tried to recover a damaged file. It didn't work. I requested Customer Support. IT TOOK TWO DAYS for them to respond. The asked for more information. I gave it. It to took TWO MORE Days for them to respond. Their solution didn't work. I canceled my subscription. Backup software is worthless if it can't make a speedy recovery. Even if their solution had worked, it would have taken FOUR DAYS for me to implement it. Try getting customer service yourself before you trust your files to this service. See how long it takes if you have a problem.

"Working for me so far"

July 07, 2009  |  By achappel

 |  Version: SugarSync Manager 1.1.8

Pros

They seem to have the best pricing structure. Files synced fine after some minor tweaking. Files are downloaded from the cloud rapidly. Visually appealing straightforward interface.

Cons

Uploads can take a long time depending on your connection. Customer service is a little slow to respond to emails. Had to figure out a few minor glitches that created duplicates and kept the program perpetually syncing.

Summary

I really like their $5 30GB plan. I wasn't able to find this combination at other file sync websites.

Although the program hasn't deleted any of my files by accident, it did take a while to figure out why the program appeared to be in perpetual syncing mode. Turns out it had downloaded duplicate copies from each computer for some files during the initial sync. It was easy to find these files, since they had "(from XX computer)" tagged onto the end of the file names. I just search for and deleted all of files with this suffix on all my computers and SugarSync finished syncing. Hopefully, the program will run smoothly from this point forward without this issue occurring again. I guess it's SugarSync's way of letting you double check files, when it isn't sure which one to pick. I just wish the program made it clear upfront when it has created duplicates.

Aside from this, the process of setting up the sync was really easy due to the straightforward interface. The only minor aesthetic gripe I have is that the font appears a little blury on my 32-bit XP machine. However, the font is fine on my 64-bit Vista machine. The company says that their software is not made for 64-bit systems, but it seems to work fine. The only issue I've found so far is that the sync icons don't show in Windows Explorer.

I think the primary concern I have with this software is the amount of time it takes to upload files from my home computer, which is behind a router connected to a cable modem. My office computer, which has a T1 connection uploads files fairly rapidly. I contacted customer service about this issue, but they didn't have a solution. They said it was due to my home computer using a 64-bit OS, but I also have a 32-bit laptop connected to my router and this computer has the same issue. I really wish they were able to provide me with a better solution. Another file syncing utility I used in the past (Windows Live Sync) was much quicker, although I didn't like the method it used to sync my files.

This leads me to my other somewhat less significant gripe, which is customer support. Although they have responded to my requests for support, their responses have been rather slow and little bit inconsistent.

All in all, I think this file syncing utility has a lot going for it. If the company would address the above concerns, I think I would be very satisfied with this file syncing solution.

Updated on Jul 29, 2009

Unfortunately, SugarSync has been renaming all of my synced files and folders in all capital letters. Apparently, many other people are experiencing the same issue, which is a major problem. SugarSync hasn't been able to come up with a solution to this problem for months now.

Cons

Summary

Misleading advertising, will manually select mulitple folders simultaneously "copy folders" to external hard drive, keep it simple, no hassle, no brainer!

"It's the best of the ok's"

May 23, 2009  |  By sandysundays

 |  Version: SugarSync Manager 1.1.8

Pros

I like the syncing feature and photo album feature.

Cons

There are so many issues with pricing. It thinks I have so much saved on there than I do... It's doubled everything. Support responds to my questions, but it's never the right answer.

Summary

Despite the cons, it's still the best option.
