CNET editors' review

For such a small Firefox plug-in, StumbleUpon wears a lot of hats. Random Web site surfer, social networker, social bookmarker, site reviewer--it's a powerful little app for 170Kb.

Installing and removing it is just as simple as any other Firefox add-on, and we struck no snags when we used it with other plug-ins or programs. Once activated, one click is all it took to get going. The "Stumble!" logo that's part of the proprietary toolbar whips the user around the Net at the user's pace, based on categories selected during installation. Hundreds of topics are available and can be updated at will, with no selection limit.

Other StumbleUpon functions are just user-friendly. A click on the toolbar's "thumbs-up" and "thumbs-down" icons make ratings a cinch, and another click is all it takes to share sites, to update the friends list, to view the rated pages list, to read reviews of the page, to peruse the menu, or to search the StumbleUpon database.

Sometimes, "stumbling" would take us to a StumbleUpon page that reminded us to upload a profile image or some other annoying-but-trivial nonsense. Another "stumble" would whisk us to our next random Web page.

If Web surfing is the new channel surfing, then StumbleUpon should be your remote.

    "Great idea!"

by FloridaSwamp on August 27, 2007

Pros: I love using this program. I have found websites I never dreamed existed.

Cons: Once in awhile you will get sent to a site that has malicious code that tries to download malware without you knowing. You should only use this if you have the noscript extension.

"Fun but will NOT work with Avant browser"

    by IE7Hate on November 4, 2007

Pros: A fun tool to waste time with.

Cons: Keeps track of too much information on you as the user. Kind of creepy moving into weird. Big drawback is it will not work with the Avant browser.

"The Best thing happened to me ever - a lifechanging experience (read more :)"

by TimppaKoo on August 17, 2007

Pros: Many others (as i) have already found the greatest things in the 'Whole Wide Web' with this nifty little and light extension (customizable and hidable toolbar) installed to FF.

I have used it since summer 2004 when i joined and always have liked this FireFox Extension better!

Both are free - also Stumbleupon to get your own unlimited Blog to share your findings, music, videos ... almost anything with others there and the whole world who's looking your pages!

Only limit is 200 Mutual Friends but Fans some best stumblers have up to 5000 - give reviews, get reviews etc ...

The best thing that i mean - although it's a sosial and Not a dating service - is that i found my Love from there and i've been now happily married over 2 years!

My Angel was living in US and i'm in Finland and this 'Fairytale made in Heaven' was still able to happen, so we both live here right now! And we are not the only ones, many others! So ... You define where this extensions starts and where it ends to ;))

Techical addition: instead of only FF it also works fine in Flock, Mozilla, Seamonkey, Netscape 8+ and Navigator 9 (with WinRar edit install.rdf to allow NS v9.1) and basicly in all XPI avarable browsers (some rare ones needs little tech customization ;)

Cons: For some people (not to me) it has been too addictive and they tell it's even been able to make one loose their sense of time and realities ;))

That's Not related to the extension itself at all - rather it's a buid in syndrome for many addiction causing disorders, but by that way it's giving an enormous alternative for drugs - at least ;)

So i think my only Con was still a Pro ... *smile*
