"Educational, innovative extension brings hours of fun!"

    by sallycinnamon78 on June 24, 2006

Pros: Choice and variety are the best aspects of StumbleUpon. The range of links, blogs, and reviews is enormous. StumbleUpon ''learns'' personal content preferences to deliver increasingly relevant results. Submitting interesting, high-quality sites improves your rank as a top stumbler, bringing your recommended sites to the forefront of the database.

StumbleUpon is community based without being claustrophobic, as you can interact with others as much or as little as you choose to.

Your page can be used as a normal blog: you are not obliged to rate any websites if you don't want to or aren't interested in them. It's worth remembering, though, that the growth of StumbleUpon's database relies on input from its users. For those who are more keen to participate, there are also hundreds of special interest groups here where you can 'meet' likeminded people, and establish your own clan if you wish.

StumbleUpon attempts to protect its users from spam: page recommendations are based on correlation and user clustering, rather than average ratings. This makes it tough for people rating their own sites as 'I like it!' to spam the database. You can hide any comment or review of your page by other stumblers, by using the 'ignore' feature against the user who posted the comment.

The StumbleUpon developers request and act upon feedback. Beginning a new thread, or adding to an existing one, in the Features forum or the Bugs forum is the best way to report any bugs or problems. Some enterprising stumblers have created excellemt addons which allow you to back up your blog amongst other things.

In terms of Spyware: I have not encountered any Spyware myself within StumbleUpon, nor have I been told of any such problems by other regular members.

Cons: 1) SU is currently having appalling server issues. It was running ridiculously slow yesterday and now has stopped working completely. This is rare, but is a nuisance.

2 Miscategorisation is rife within the site. All websites are classed as part of a certain topic. Other stumblers frequently change the topic classification of websites you have both reviewed. Your own categorisation then becomes obsolete, and the only way of monitoring this is to trawl through your own tag list and recategorise as needed. This is enough to drive a sane person completely loopy, particularly when so many people seem to mess this up for no reason whatsoever.

    3) The program has occasional bugs, although these are usually solved quickly.

    4) Within the themed stumble groups, you cannot organise sites - they appear as haphazard links. A more advanced tag system within groups is needed.

    5) The official site states that "Multiple StumbleUpon accounts held by the same individual are subject to termination unless expressly authorized by StumbleUpon." This kinda sucks if you want to have seperate SU blogs, eg one for pics and one for reviews.

One important point: SU is not really suitable for specific or targeted 'spot-on' searching - it If you search for "art history" using the SUGooglesearch, you'll simply get search results of every site that contains the words "art history." You will also, however, get the best sites available for those topics (determined by stumbler ratings).
