Giving WinZip a run for its money, StuffIt Standard offers effortless file compression and encryption for any type of file. It matches WinZip in several features, including archived password protection, right-click compression, and a gallery of easy-to-use wizards. The utility also comes with a few unique features, including a robust search tool that locates files by date, type, size, and compression format. For others to decompress native StuffIt files, they'll either need the free StuffIt Expander utility or they'll be presented with a self-extracting archive, which adds to the overall file size. Fortunately, StuffIt also can compress in several other formats, including ZIP, TAR, and BinHex, though you won't get the added JPEG compression. Given its features, compression quality, and encryption options, StuffIt Standard stands up to WinZip in most areas. Digital-photo mavens may even prefer it.Publisher's description
From Smith Micro :StuffIt Standard Edition for Windows makes it easy to access any download or attachment and to send files that transfer quickly and securely. The application can create self-extracting archives that open automatically and also can find compressed files quickly. It has an easy-to-use drag-and-drop interface and wizards to email and upload archives to FTP sites. StuffIt makes it simple to access e-mail attachments and downloads that were compressed on any platform, including Windows, Linux, Unix, and Mac. Plus, you can use the new drag-and-drop tools to open or view the contents of Zip, StuffIt, Tape, or other archives instantly.

Version: StuffIt Standard Edition 9
"Good for all those .sit archives created in MAC OSX"
Pros: Its pretty easy to use.
Works well with all those archives people create in Mac OSX.
Cons: Its not free.
It very slow compared to WinRAR or WinZIP.
Who, outside of Mac users, actually makes use of the compression mechanisms that this program uses?

Version: StuffIt Standard Edition 9
"Only useful for .SIT / .SITX / .HQX files; poor general choice for non-MacOS"
Pros: It's about the only thing that opens Mac-specific compressed archives like HQX, SIT, and Allume's own SITX format. It does that just fine.
Cons: The supposedly free StuffIt Expander is only available with the StuffIt Standard Demo; it can't be installed separately; there's no selective uninstall. WinRAR, WinZip, and many others are much better tools for Windows users, and there are plenty of tools for *nix users. Useful -only- when you encounter a Mac archive file that you can't get in any other format.

Version: StuffIt Standard Edition 9
Pros: works for Macs, I guess...
Cons: Why pay for this then deVault, which is free, does so much more and has built-in encryption, synchronize, backup, restore, version control, email, ftp, previewing, printing and sharing. The link is ekwintools.com

Version: StuffIt Standard Edition 9
Pros: It was it's suppose to...sort of.
Cons: What a bloated peace of software. Then there is the issue of very limited functionality (even in the full version). There are programs that support a lot more formats and are less than half the size. $24 for this...are they nuts? It's very rare that I encounter a sit archive for Windows.

Version: StuffIt Standard Edition 9
Pros: Compresses JPGs interestingly enough. Does decomp/compression well enough and fairly straightforward.
Cons: Why do you need to compress much of anything anymore? The only thing I can think of is downloaded programs and self-extracting files work well enough.
I got this thinking it would catalog disks or maybe backup and catalog reading the ads. But not really good for that at all.
