Cross the arcade Asteroids with a good, old resource-harvesting strategy game, then make it massively multiplayer, and you'd get something like Stellar Frontier. You command a small ship fighting for one of three races. Your goal is to upgrade your ship and equip it with better weapons, and for that you'll need to colonize planets and destroy ships belonging to players on the other side. The game has no built-in tutorial or help system, but the developer s site has a long (but not-easy-to-understand) game guide. A rich set of weapons as well as a variety of tactical tricks make the game very addictive, once you've learned the rules. The fairly primitive 2D graphics, however, may turn off some. The game's dedicated and friendly online community is one of its main attractions. Taking into account its relatively small file size, we'd guess most gamers, especially shoot-em-up fans, will find Stellar Frontier a worthwhile download.Publisher's description
From Stardock :Stellar Frontier is a free multiplayer game that plays like an arcade game, but with an overall strategic look and feel. You are in command of a single starship for a chosen civilization (Humans, Drengin, or Arceans) either offline for fun, or online on servers that act as other players' star systems, advancing in rank as you gain experience. This allows you to fly different ships and try out weapons, as well as command AI-controlled ships.

Version: Stellar Frontier 1.1
Pros: I have been playing this game through windows 95,96,2000, and now XP. I know it to work on all of those versions of OS. I have played SF for the past 5-6 years and I am still addicted. It may be a little difficult to start playing but it is a great game to learn. People who give it bad reviews have said that it isn't even worth the FREE download to get it. I strongly disagree. I downloaded it for free all those years ago and I have never had a serious problem. I know that it can be buggy, laggy and problematic but that is true with any multiperson online game. I say don't heed the nay-sayers just download it and give it a serious chance. If you do you will be hooked. I have made many friends in Stellar Frontier and have encouraged my real life friends to start playing it. It is free dispite what some say. There are upgrades that cost more but you do not have to buy them. If you decide to upgrade it is a ONE time investment of $20. After that you are free to play without restriction. My Stellar Frontier name is Tovec and I have been around since v1. I have become Tovec over the years. You can reach me at sf_Tovec@hotmail.com, Tovec of Yore (AIM), or Tovec_of_Yore@yahoo.com
Thank you,
Tovec

Version: Stellar Frontier 1.1
Pros: This game has an easy interface, great chatbox and interactivity. Sometimes the offline play is nice too.
****If you'r wondering where to get a version that works online and you can actually connect write in the white box [after clicking play on internet] sf.stardock.net or sf-x.stardock.net or if you can not update it... do search in Google for "StellarFrontier Download" without quotes, the site with the description saying its 14.3 mbs has a working installer/game in a zip file.*****
The other thing I love about this game is the fleets, clans , guilds or whatever you may call them; groups. It gives you a sense of unity in a game where the lack of unity could very well rock your world since the game's very object is to conquer and to win, or to destroy enemy ships. Another great point about this game is the modification abilities throughout modding servers, or perhaps the game panels/interface itself. One more great thing is the people who at the time of this review seem to enjoy helping new players.
Last but not least is the amazing support the players dish out to the game in order to keep it available.
Despite the lag, you can get used to it depending on how good of a learner you are. Same with the controls which are easy to master within good time.
Other pros may include the fact that this game does not have 3d graphics that 'degrade' the game for example ...
games that have good graphics generally that also have good graphics for enviroments that are generally not detailed much [random computer generated enviroments] are not well suited for graphics and game relations.
As I believe games complexity and graphics should match. So if I was playing a game where all you do is move papers from box 1 to box 2 [as in the object of the game] and the graphics were 3 D; the game would not appeal to me. Now after this long explanation I'm trying to say that this game has balance between graphics, complexity and enjoyment!
Enjoy the game!
Cons: Lag, in other words the guessing game that never ends in most old games; in which you have to hit the person on *their* screen, and not your own. Which means hitting into blank space is in some cases better than hitting the person on your screen.
Another thing that is not desirable in this product is the IP addresses show; which is good and bad. For example people are always accusing someone for being someone-else they may very well be, but it's hurtfull for the person if its the case in which they are not the other party. To further the previous explanation, someone ruining your repputation could possibly ruin it; or if you are good at solving mysteries... just plain out waste your time even if the sittuation is solved and all is forgiven. In sittuations where the imposter is good, being run through the mill emotionally depressing which is a major downer for such a great game.

"Great game! -Dragonarc, High-Ranking SF Player"
Pros: If you play online with other people, you are bound to have a great time. Everyone always chats in a great atmosphere, and the game's 2D graphics are easy to distinguish. I highly recommend this game; with its great artificial intelligence, ranked starships, and amazing arsenal of surprises, you just won't get enough of it!
Cons: One thing that might hit you hard AT FIRST is the fact of the amount of controls. There are a lot of keys to press in different situations, but within a month or two, you're bound to have it all down. But you will never get to experience the joy of winning if you quit early!

"As bad as the worst STEAM product"
Pros: This program downloaded and installed just fine - but went down-hill from there. Yes, the program starts. There is no fee to download and install software - that's about it.
Cons: It reminds me of several STEAMed products - "You cannot play this game in offline mode, because you are not online". (Note to STEAM: "DUH! Why the heck would you call it OFFLINE mode anyways?" End of rant)
Program started, could modify the sound and music - but no other option worked (not even when I got onto the internet via my dialup ISP).
