Regular cleaning helps keep your PC running like new, but it's not enough: you need speed. UniBlue's SpeedUpMyPC 2013 with Registry Booster not only purges junk files and defragments your PC's registry, on demand or on schedule, but its Active Speed Tools can tweak nearly any PC's performance. For example, its CPU Manager keeps runaway processes from using up available system resources, while the Start Menu Software Accelerator launches your apps quicker. Of course, you can also deselect any tool you don't want to run or any item you don't want to clean, as well as add items to SpeedUpMyPC's ignore list, and even roll back any changes you don't like. You can schedule regular cleaning and optimizing, too. SpeedUpMyPC 2013 is free to try but only fixes 15 errors. Recent updates include Windows 8 compatibility.

SpeedUpMyPC's installer addresses a longstanding issue we've had with system cleaners: namely, scanning as soon as the program opens and before we've had a chance to see what it does and review its options. We simply unchecked the box labeled Automatically Start Scanning on Launch. SpeedUpMyPC's user interface bears a general resemblance to other tools of its type; it's a bit loud and busy, at least on the Overview tab, but simple enough to understand, with links to a Quick Start Guide and Help feature in the LiveUpdate section. In addition to the Overview, SpeedUpMyPC has three more tabs: System Scan, Perform+, and Manage. We clicked Manage and opened the program's Settings, which include the Scheduler, Proxy settings, and some general options. We could also access the Undo changes tool, the Registry ignore list, and the Registry repair logs.

Our scan completed quickly and turned up several items our lightweight regular scanner had missed and that we could choose to fix, ignore for now, or add to the ignore list. SpeedUpMyPC fixed all errors after taking a registry backup. It also identified some minor speed impediments and recommended some tweaks, some of which we implemented, such as disabling performance counters. Others we didn't need. The Perform+ tab accesses more tweaks, including a Proactive Thumbnail Generator. SpeedUpMyPC 2013 is recommended for PCs new and old.
