This free program offers some useful system details to those savvy enough to understand its results. SpeedFan's tabbed interface isn't hard to navigate, but most users won't be able to make head or tail of the data this utility provides. The program's system-tray icon tells you the temperature of your PC's hard drive, and you can receive information on voltage and fan speeds.
The utility can display SMART data and includes a tool for resetting motherboard clocks. Basically, if this review makes no sense to you, SpeedFan is above your head and won't be worth downloading. However, PC technicians and those who like to do their own system maintenance might as well take a look at this application, particularly since it costs nothing.
Publisher's description
From Almico Software :SpeedFan monitors voltages, fan speeds, and temperatures in computers with hardware monitor chips. SpeedFan can even access S.M.A.R.T. info for those hard disks that support this feature and show hard disk temperatures too, if supported. SpeedFan fully supports SCSI disks too. SpeedFan can even change the FSB on some hardware (but this should be considered a bonus feature). At the lowest level, SpeedFan is an hardware monitor software that can access temperature sensors, but its main feature is that it can control fan speeds (depending on the capabilities of your sensor chip and your hardware) according to the temperatures inside your pc, thus reducing noise and power consumption.
Version 4.2.3 added full 64 bit support; added chinese translation; added support for new SMBus and new chips from Fintek and National Semiconductor; fixed Winbond W83627EHF fan speed readings.

Version: SpeedFan 4.23
"Decent Program: IF U'r having problems read my "cons""
Pros: Five stars from me cuz: 1. Totally FREE, no ad/spyware or license gimmicks. Performs as well as any in it's class (class meaning, baring a precision calibrated temp cooling system). Minor problem arose, solution below.
Cons: My platform: Vaio Laptop P4M 2.2 Ghz, XP-Pro+ SP2. I started with the version of SpeedFan (SF) just prior to 4.23, now using this one. Had problems with both ver. My DVD player hanging during movie playing / copying. possibly other problem but this was most noticed.
Cause: Took me for frickin' ever to figure it out. Once SF is running, restore the main window, click CONFIGURE, then OPTIONS tab. Near the bottom of OPTIONS, "Let SF acesss..." then two check boxes "ISA BUS" and "SMSBus". I disabled both (uncheck), still get an HDD temp. reading (only one though) but no more DVD problems. Just my experience that may help. But really overall good freeware.

Pros: You can monitor temperatures and fan variables
Cons: It monitors the hadware but if you are trying to figure out what the fields are, that's when you start getting a little bit confuse.

Version: SpeedFan 4.23
Pros: does exactly what I want with S.M.A.R.T. functions better than what came with maxtor hard drives.
Cons: it didn't pick up the western digital sensors.
