This free program offers some useful system details to those savvy enough to understand its results. SpeedFan's tabbed interface isn't hard to navigate, but most users won't be able to make head or tail of the data this utility provides. The program's system-tray icon tells you the temperature of your PC's hard drive, and you can receive information on voltage and fan speeds.
The utility can display SMART data and includes a tool for resetting motherboard clocks. Basically, if this review makes no sense to you, SpeedFan is above your head and won't be worth downloading. However, PC technicians and those who like to do their own system maintenance might as well take a look at this application, particularly since it costs nothing.
Publisher's description
From Almico Software :SpeedFan monitors voltages, fan speeds, and temperatures in computers with hardware monitor chips. SpeedFan can even access S.M.A.R.T. info for those hard disks that support this feature and show hard disk temperatures too, if supported. SpeedFan fully supports SCSI disks too. SpeedFan can even change the FSB on some hardware (but this should be considered a bonus feature). At the lowest level, SpeedFan is an hardware monitor software that can access temperature sensors, but its main feature is that it can control fan speeds (depending on the capabilities of your sensor chip and your hardware) according to the temperatures inside your pc, thus reducing noise and power consumption.
Version 4.22 added, fixed, and verified fan speed changing support for a lot of chips and motherboards; fixed temperature readings for SCSI disks; added full support for Fintek chips; added Japanese translation and several other fixes and improvements.

Version: SpeedFan 4.22
Pros: Added info of your PC
Cons: i was only able to use one feature.I wasnt able to control fan speed. I guess you must give it some time to maximise its usefullness. It tries to connect to the internet too...hmmm...

Version: SpeedFan 4.22
Pros: I agree with that it is lacking some basic options, and won't detect all fan types. But for a free app, it is very good.
Also, for those of you who don't already know, it will not detect a fan if it just hooked to power. It has to be on the mobo as well.
Cons: Lacking some basic options.

"Luckily SpeedFan can really control my laptop fan speed"
Pros: It has cured my big headache. The story:recently I bought a very cheap(about US$540) but brandnew laptop from an Asian market. It works very well, online & offline, with Windows XP. But its fan in normal operation gives a continuous high-pitch 'wee...' sound, a nuisance especially in a quiet study environment. No one could help, not even the manufacturer / its agents. They said the noise was normal & its fan speed ensured a 'cool' laptop. I became very disappointed & helpless except buying a new laptop, quite costly (at least US$750) until I found SpeedFan4.22. The software happens to be able to control my laptop fan speed to a level low enough for a desired temperature and with a acceptably low noise. To my surprise, the software is so small but solve my big problem. It is simple to operate but takes time & effort for a new user to learn. Besides, it is FREE. So now, my laptop gives bad noise only during the startup time, less than a minute. Once in Windows, I can run SpeedFan at once & change the fan speed easily to remove the bad noise. I take this opportunity to give my deepest thanks to the software Publisher.
Cons: The software operation looks simple but you don't really appreciate until you learn & try with the Help Menu.
It does not work with all kinds of computers. I tried the software on my desktop PC. It showed relevant information but can't control fan speed at all.

Version: SpeedFan 4.22
"You definitely don't need it, but it doesnt hurt to have it."
Pros: My fav feature is the temperature monitor. You can control fan speed to reduce noise (although i wouldnt reccomend doing this on the first fan, as it is usually the CPU fan, slowing it down too much could fry your processor)
Cons: The temp monitor goes berserk sometimes (Temp3 could be -118º Celsius one second, then +118º Celsius the next (That ranges from -180º to + 244º Fahrenheit) and you can't make the fans go any faster than 100% (maybe a good thing, but i would still like that feature)

Pros: Fast install, found 2 of my fans(all i had anyway) I like having control over my fan speeds.
Cons: Forces you to minimize. If you x out all fan speeds are set to 100%. So basicaly, you cant close it with out distroying something.
