Version: SpamExperts Home 1.1.1.2
"Better than other spam filter programs"
Pros: Its free.
Installation requires no setup whatsoever. Just install the program, have it startup at windows, and reboot. Come back into Windows and start using your favorite mail client...the program supports Outlook Express, MS Outlook, Thunderbird, Eudora, Incredimail, Mozilla, The Bat!, and Pegasus Mail. AND, if the program doesn't already search for it by default you can add your mail program (all it does it look for the mail program process in the memory, and since the program installs an LSP layer it will work with ANY mail program).
It intercepts all incoming mail, setups the accounts automatically and filters out the bad stuff.
Marking mail as spam, or not spam, is very easy...and the program has a Windows like interface, letting you highlight more than one mail message.
The program lets you preview all mail before it goes into your mail program. So all those bad spam e-mails with a virus infected image which would normally show up in Outlook Express' preview window? SpamExperts shows it as text.
It is kind of like an antivirus program. It has spam definitions, which are updated and downloaded on a remote server. Using these defs it can check your mail with some algorithm to see if its spam or not.
Lets you define both SAFE and NOT SAFE e-mail addresses.
Nice looking XP interface.
Windows is resizable :).
Cons: It installs an LSP layer. It is safe, but it may not be one's cup of tea. The alternative is a proxy in such programs, but I dont like proxies, so I dont mind the whole LSP layer stuff.
Definition updates take a long time to download and update on the local machine.
The system tray icon, while nice looking, has a poor secondary icon showing the program is actively scanning new mail. The normal icon has a black border, while the scanning-status icon drops the black border. It is hard to tell the difference.
Like all spam filtering programs, SpamExpert requires some user input on incoming mail, in defining it as spam or not, so it can learn what is spam and what is not.
Because it intercepts and scans all incoming mail you have to be patient and let it do its job, as it will stall the mail process for some time as it scans. After the scan is done you have to re-retrieve the mail, as now SpamExpert holds it temporarily.
The setting to let the program periodically check the defined mail servers for new mail seemed to cause a problem with one of my mail servers, telling me that some program was using the conenction and that Outlook Express couldn't get the mail...odd.
