Version: Sound Forge 8.0d build 128
Pros: I'm a hardcore open-source fan, so I usually don't shell out cash of this magnitude. This is one of my few exceptions.
I use Soundforge because it is the perfect remastering tool if you are a music producer and need pinpoint precision editing. It also acts as a VST host, so now that the user can add more filters, it is very versatile. What impressed me the most was its ability to edit streaming audio playback from videos - something I haven't seen from an audio editor before.
Not all commercial software can be emulated by free alternatives.
With that said, Soundforge is well worth giving up a few bucks for.
Cons: Clumsy controls on waveform graphs.
Rather slow startup times, especially when VST(i) plugins are found.
One of the advanced filters costs another $20.00, but I can live without it.
Preinstalled filters are generic and cluttered about the toolbar.
