CNET Editors' review
Calling TechSmith's SnagIt a screen capture tool is a bit like calling a Swiss Army Knife a knife. Yes, it's first and foremost a screen capture tool, and a very good one at that. But SnagIt offers a lot more than free gadgets that also capture screen images. In fact, it's much more of a graphics toolkit optimized for capturing and using onscreen images and information than a screen grabber. SnagIt is advanced enough to enhance productivity for business users and other professionals, but it's also easy for home users to start right up with. If you regularly copy images, Web pages, and screen views to save, embed, share, and use in other ways, SnagIt is well worth trying. It's free to use for 30 days.
The first thing we realized when we downloaded and opened SnagIt is that it offers a lot of options, even during setup. SnagIt includes specific add-ons and output tools for each Office application; choosing the custom installation option let us keep from installing features we don't use. A Disk Cost counter tracked the space SnagIt used, too. The next thing we noticed is that SnagIt comes with lots of help, especially when you click "I'm New to SnagIt" when the setup wizard finishes. A video tutorial, online manual, and simple yet intuitive interface make SnagIt easy to pick up. SnagIt not only offers multiple ways to capture screen images, Web pages, and other data and elements but also to use your captures, such as the built-in SnagIt Editor, OneClick operations, SnagIt Printer, and various output profiles. There's even a freehand option that lets you draw your selection. A system tray menu let us quickly access SnagIt's features and settings.
There's an old cartoon in which a wee lad has just downed five or six ice cream sodas. He says to the man behind the counter, "And now I want to thank you very, very much." The look on the guy's face sums up how software makers feel about the sweat of their brow. SnagIt offers a lot more than just a vastly superior screen capture tool. It's worth the price.

"Cool, first was a bit complicated"
Version: Snagit 11.0
Pros
I used usual capturing tools, so Snagit was my first try. First, it was a bit unusual, then I got used to and still prefer it over other programs.
Cons
none. Works fine, no bugs or error messages.
Summary
It's easy and with lots of handy features!

"Easy to use, functionality +, fantastic graphics editor"
Version: Snagit 11.0
Pros
The title says it all, really. I've been using Snagit for several years now, and it just keeps getting better and better. Every version comes out with more features that lend to it's functionality. Aside from the screenshot feature, the graphics editor is just awesome and SO easy to use. I literally use mine every day. I have a web design and social network management business, and I would be lost without Snagit. I use it to create custom graphics every day for clients. For instance, when Facebook switched to the Timeline layout, I used the Snagit graphics editor to create all the banner graphics for my clients business pages. Since it allows you to work in layers and add text, I was able to come up with a custom graphic unique to each client that they absolutely loved very quickly. At that time I had over a dozen public pages to do, and did them all in one day. I've also used it to create hard-copy print flyers and magazine ads. The DPI adjustment feature is very helpful with those.
Cons
No "cons" to really report. I never have any problems or glitches with this software. I will mention one little detail to take note of if you use the graphics editor and have to re-install this into a new computer... I recently upgraded to a 64-bit PC with WIN 7 from using Vista. Apparently Vista Home Premium came with fonts that are not offered standard with WIN 7. When I installed Snagit into my new PC, I noticed that some of my fonts were missing. When I contacted TechSmith, they said that Snagit uses whatever fonts are installed in your MS OS. I didn't realize that, and had not backed up my fonts before the hard drive gave out on my old PC. So I had to spend quite a bit of time tracking down fonts and installing them into my new PC to use in the Snagit Graphics Editor. Quite a few fonts that I use regularly do not come in WIN 7. I'd like to see Snagit come up with a way to back up the fonts in their software, so that they can be transferred from one PC to another.
Summary
Once you start using this, you'll quickly grow to love it. It's the one piece of software that I cannot do without. I originally bought it for the screenshot feature, and discovered that the graphics editor was the easiest to use on the market. I tried out several other brands of software before I found Snagit, and I give
TechSmith huge KUDOS for making this SO easy to use. The rest that I tried...well, I would have had to take weeks worth of classes just to learn how to use them. I really cannot say enough good about this software, and I recommend it all the time when folks ask HOW I create such great graphics on my web sites and social network pages. TechSmith definitely gets an A+ for this one. I'd give it 10 stars if I could! -

"I Love Snaggit"
Version: Snagit 11.0
Pros
Quick captures
Cons
More pricey than I expected
Summary
We use Snaggit at work and I just couldn't handle not having it at home anymore. I was dismayed it cost as much as it did, but I plan to buy it after my free trial is over. I just use it too much. It's a wonderfu tool I find I can't live without.

"Easy tool to do screen captures"
Version: Snagit 11.0
Pros
Very easy to use.
Cons
Somewhat pricey.
-
"Wonderful tool...capture anything!"
Version: Snagit 11.0
Pros
Multiple capture modes
Ease of use
Image editor saves past captures so you can easily refer back to them
Image editor has many useful tools to be able to quickly point out areas of interestCons
none that I've found
Summary
I love the different types of captures that can be used. 95% of the time, I use the all-in-one which can quickly capture the entire screen, a select window or a hand drawn selection. You can also capture text, menus with time delay and quickly capture a scrolling view of an entire webpage (even with links). The fact that the editor saves past images has proven valuable on multiple occasions. I use this tool everyday for emails and professional documentation. I could not live without it!

"Snagit it is full of snags."
Version: Snagit 11.0
Pros
Basic features work.
Cons
I was dumb enough to believe that the upgrade would solve the scrolling window capture problems.
-
"cant live without tool"
Version: Snagit 11.0
Pros
price
frequency of updatesCons
feature overload?
-
"One of the most used programs I have ever owned"
Version: Snagit 11.0
Pros
Everything I could ask for in an imaging capture program
Cons
So far have had nothing negative to say about it period
Summary
I literally use this program every day and several times a day at that. You can capture anything, even things that you can only see in a popup bubble when you hover over it. In text capture mode you can capture text in situations where you cannot copy text. Once you capture that text you can edit words and add to words and these words become searchable. If you need to capture everything on the page but you have to scroll down to see it all, it has a scrolling capture mode as well. This baby lets you do things that you never even thought about doing, it's a life saver in many cases, at least it has been for me. I couldn't live without it!
