CNET Editors' review
Applications that divide the desktop into separate windows are nothing new, nor is the habit of keeping multiple windows open simultaneously, especially when surfing the Web. Small, low-resolution screens and a lack of graphics power have kept such tools from catching on. Slickscreen is a new variation on the theme that capitalizes on the increasing use of widescreen monitors and gaming-quality video cards to present a clearer, more useful multiwindow view when you're browsing. It divides your screen into non-overlapping, high-resolution browser windows that let you surf multiple sites simultaneously without obscuring any content.
We installed Slickscreen on a new PC with a midrange video card driving a wide-screen LCD monitor. It opened in a three-pane view with the Slickscreen welcome screen displayed in the larger window and our open Web pages in the other two. Each window has its own address bar, navigation buttons, and control icons, including zoom, drag and drop, and swap controls for manipulating panels. Along the top edge of its interface, Slickscreen sports a series of layout icons that let us quickly toggle between a single pane window and various combinations of two, three, four, and more panes. We clicked the four-pane view and browsed to a new site in the blank window. We could refresh, print, and bookmark pages, open pages in our default browser, and open new tabs within the individual panels from their toolbars. The program's configuration options included sliders to set auto refresh and rotation rates; customizable skin colors; and an Advanced tab that let us disable auto zooming and embed Windows Media Player in Slickscreen when opened locally.
Slickscreen is also available as Slickscreen Professional, with more startup and customization options and more automatic features. We look at it this way: 1) The freeware version is plenty capable; and 2) the Pro version costs about as much as a mediocre club sandwich. If you like Slickscreen, you have a choice that won't go wrong in either case. It's the first program of its kind we've actually liked enough to keep around.
Publisher's Description
From Slickscreen:
Slickscreen is a new and exciting software tool that allows people with high resolution displays to browse the web, or work your browser applications, by leveraging the investment in your graphics card and monitor. iPhones and iPads are great, but where are the "apps" for your high resolution Windows PC? You spent good money on that 42" flat panel monitor, or that 17" gaming laptop, how about some new software that leverages that investment? Slickscreen is designed for web browsing in a high resolution environment. Unlike traditional programs, where content get hidden or clipped, Slickscreen is based on a non-overlapping multi-paneled interface. Because the interface can be resized without hiding the surrounding content, you can work more efficiently. View more, browser better, work smarter. It's that simple. Say goodbye to "Alt+Tab" and losing your focus on hidden tabs and windows. If you are an information junkie, have spent money on large screen or good graphics card, a power web user, or simply want something fresh and new, Slickscreen could be right for you. Features and Benefits: Maximize your screen real estate with Slickscreen's unique non-overlapping interface. Compare and work with web sites side by side with ease. Save multi-panel layouts, Slickscreen's multi-panel bookmarks. Drag and drop links from one panel to another for the ultimate in web productivity. New: Every Slickscreen panel can add 'traditional' web browsing 'tabs'. Leverages Microsoft's Internet Explorer rendering engine for performance, privacy and security. Lightweight - We keep it simple for fast web browsing. Integrates--doesn't try to replace--your default browser (Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer). Panels can auto-refresh and auto-rotate at user defined intervals. A great solution for corporate lobbies, break rooms or operational dashboards (requires a corporate license to use).
What's new in this version: Version 1.3 adds the ability to capture running windows applications into a Slickscreen panel.

Print very small on some screens.

"Auto-Zoom Four Pane Browser with Application Parenting"
Version: Slickscreen 1.3
Pros
Intuitive design. Auto-Zoom rocks. Does what it says.
Cons
Needs the ability to send the window to the tasktray. This is important because it is necessary to almost think like you are in two environments when using the program and the location of the minimized icon changes when you launch new applications.
Summary
Absolutely great web browser with the ability to use alternate rendering engines via application capture. Don't like IE's Trident rendering? Switch to Chrome WebKit with just a couple of clicks. On the downside to this, I love the auto-zoom function when using the default Trident rendering built into the application, and you lose that when you capture other browsers. On the upside, they handled the loss of capture (you close the application, you drag the chrome tab back into another chrome window) very well.
The animation effects are top notch, but they tend to enter a wierd loop when resizing the application, looks like the internal frame is popping at you.
A taskicon (like the ones next to the clock) to minimize and restore the application would be an awesome addition, it's annoying that such a crucial application doesn't have it's own taskicon.
On the whole, and excellent application. I haven't purchased it yet, but the ability to customize and personalize the settings are disabled until I do. Which at the price of $4.99 I'm pretty sure I will. If they add the taskicon I mentioned above I'm sold for certain.
This application gets 5 stars. I love it. Of course I'm operating under the assumption that they'll soon add a taskicon.
In final closing thoughts, I hope they add a taskicon.
Did I mention this application needs it's own taskicon? -

"Newest version is sweet"
Version: Slickscreen 1.3
Pros
The ability to have VLC player, Outlook, Facebook and a work window, all in one interface is very helpful.

"Great for side by side comparisons and copy/paste"
Version: Slickscreen 1.3
Pros
Ability to layout your screen with web and traditional apps in a non-overlapping fashion so apps/web sites don't get hidden or clipped.
Dragging and dropping content from panel to panel is very useful.Cons
You need a good sized screen or high resolution display. Minimum display resolution is probably 1200 pixels wide.
Summary
Great application for people with good screens.
