If you're looking to make free voice or video calls worldwide, Skype is a great start. Its clean and user-friendly interface makes interaction effortless, so you are ready to go as soon as you launch the app.

During our testing, we were impressed by the video and voice quality of Skype, which uses VoIP (Voice over IP) technology to enable communication worldwide without paying a cent. One of its best features is the chat and mood messages: if you are in the middle of something, you can inform your contacts about it or just type a text message instead of having a voice call. This is a nice feature on its own, but it's also handy if you don't have a microphone.

But this isn't the only feature you'll love: we also enjoyed Skype's ability to handle conference calling, group video calling, and screen sharing. In other words, if you have a reliable Internet connection, Skype can easily replace your phone and lower your communication bills.

To make calls, all you have to do is create a contact list of friends, family, and colleagues, but they must also have Skype, as only Skype-to-Skype calls are free. However, a great addition to the app is its ability to call landlines or mobile phones, but you'll need to purchase Skype credits to take advantage of this feature.

Its chatlike user interface makes Skype very easy to use, yet the key to optimum performance is a reliable Internet connection. As soon as you launch the app and start using it, you will surely place Skype among your favorite apps, just like we did after our test. Skype's useful features and intuitive user interface make the app appropriate for users of all levels.

"This is not ok."

March 17, 2011  |  By Kevasion

 |  Version: Skype 5.0.0.7994

Pros

Nothing i can see after a week of use.

Cons

The list is very long. Don't want to spend more time ranting on Skype than I've done this passed week.

Summary

Over complicated interface. A lot of pre installed features like the notification every time somebody logs on and off drives me crazy. Couldn't find how to turn it off. Can't get a new window to automatically pop up when someone written me a new message. I'm going back to the previous version!

"Perhaps the worst Skype version ever on any platform."

March 16, 2011  |  By MWayneBrown

 |  Version: Skype 5.0.0.7994

Pros

Video Conference Call (but I don't need or us it).

Cons

The user interface is horrid. Perhaps the worst version of Skype ever on any platform.

Summary

I want to roll back to version 4. I cannot believe how bad this user interface is. It's fat. it consumes far too much screen space. It is much harder to manage online contact. The chat window does not pop-up when in use, but instead stays anchored to the contact list. I'm not adverse to change, but there needs to be an option to continue to have a low-impact interface.

"Dangerous, badly conceived and damaging software"

March 16, 2011  |  By ryensen

 |  Version: Skype 5.0.0.7994

Pros

none that I can see

Cons

disabled access to my firewire iSight camera. The camera works fine with other apps so it is fully functional, but on upgrading Skype fails to recognize my outboard iSight. This makes the product blind!

Summary

Avoid this software, or at least save your prior version to reinstall if necessary. The folks at Skype have been unresponsive.

"Don't upgrade from Skype 4"

March 15, 2011  |  By techlooker

 |  Version: Skype 5.0.0.7994

Pros

New features like multi-person video calling (if you use that).

Cons

Terrible UI: I use skype a lot for chat and have multiple windows stacked on top of each other along the right side of my screen. The 5.0 version is fine if that is the only thing you want on the screen, but I don't.

Summary

If you have Skype 4 don't upgrade to 5.0 or at very least have a backup of Skype 4 so that you can go back.

"Sykpe 5.0 for MAC"

March 15, 2011  |  By Sirfish

 |  Version: Skype 5.0.0.7994

Pros

Looks nice and chic but the cons are stronger than the pros.

Cons

-Takes up too much space. cant make the window as small as I want. -Its intrusive.
-Too many bells and whistles.
-Could not find how to easily switch user accounts for those with more than one Skype account.

Summary

If u like bells and whistle and Flashy, then get the new one.
If you like function over flashy, definately keep the old.
KEEP IT SIMPLE.
Looks a bit intrusive and frustrating that not possible to make the window the size we want.

"Why do app developers make change for change's sake?"

March 14, 2011  |  By NigelH1

 |  Version: Skype 5.0.0.7994

Pros

Like everyone else, I didn't see much that makes this any sort of improvement over v2.8 at all. Conference video option could be useful (even way overdue), but what's this I hear about it being a paid service?

Cons

Agree with all the other adverse comments here. Also, hate the fact that it seems one can't break out chat windows, so what happens now if I wanna have more than one chat session at a time?

Summary

I'm definitely keeping hold of my v2.8 installer for now. OK, I'll persevere with v5 for a while and look for answers to the deficient features - like ***, they *removed* the call history management function? How stupid and pointless - how can ANY software developer think that removing useful options from an application is a bloody improvement? Sheesh.

"now it's almost as awful as the windows version"

March 14, 2011  |  By thesoundofthings

 |  Version: Skype 5.0.0.7994

Pros

chat window attached to vid calls, pop-up window for chat messages

Cons

cannot reduce image size of video calls
useless call bar
no screen sharing

Summary

This program is FAR more clunky and bloated than the last versions. In this version one loses chat history management, screen sharing (as far as I can tell), and the ability in previous versions to shrink chat windows down to nearly any minuscule size they like. You also cannot get rid of the side "drawer" by the list of contacts, like you could before. So, whether you are video chatting or just looking at your contacts, you can never get rid of a window that will take up a minimum of about 6in x 5in (on my 15" macbook)- it's huge, trust me. Also the new window that hangs over your other program windows when Skype is in the background is useless during video calls. It might have been helpful, but all it offers is mute, hold, and hangup. Of first importance for this little gadget, I think, is getting you back to your call, or being able to type in messages in your chats. Nope, nothing. The only benefit to the mini window is seeing when a chat contact is typing, and if they send you a message. Which is nice, but hardly worth all of the drawbacks.

"DO NOT UPGRADE to this new version of Skype"

March 10, 2011  |  By farrers

 |  Version: Skype 5.0.0.7994

Pros

The new layout "looks" a little nicer, that's about it.

Cons

The new layout is lackluster to say the least! Navigation is anything but intuitive. I still can't find or manage my call history like I could with the old version. I do not like the new version AT ALL.

Summary

Do not upgrade to this new version if you haven't already. If you have, do some searches online to roll back to a previous version. I found the version 2.8.0.851 at: en.softonic.com/s/skype-2.8.0.851:mac

"From great to garbage."

March 08, 2011  |  By Cyberoid

 |  Version: Skype 5.0.0.7994

Pros

Skype for Mac 2.8 was among teleconferencing's best of breeds, but...

Cons

Skype for Mac 5 is now among the worst of all teleconferencing solutions. Its interface defies logic and usability, and its technical reliability is nil. I'm actively seeking an alternative while continuing to use Skype for Mac 2.8.

Summary

There is no way I will ever again use Skype for Mac 5.0 to conduct an important meeting. In fact, I will never use it again for anything. I can do point to point video with the old Skype or Google Talk and that's just fine. We tried using Skype for Mac 5.0's group videoconferencing service and things fell apart immediately. Users couldn't figure out the controls, the Group we created prior to the attempted videoconference couldn't be used for the videoconference -- each user had to be added one at a time, while everyone else waited and waited -- and then the damn video wouldn't work. My iSight has never before not worked with Skype, but today it didn't.

What really rankles is how arrogant the Skype design team and management have proven to be. Despite literally thousands of complaints and suggestions about Skype for Mac 5.0, and even more users signing off to go back to Skype 2.8 -- which is available here: http://mac.oldapps.com/skype.php -- Skype just continued forcing its monster on us. If you download it now, it may wipe out your 2.8, a very bad bargain.

I can't wait for Apple to get its teleconferencing software in order. I'll be its first happy camper. And if you want to see what really lies ahead, leaving Skype smoldering in the ashes, check this out: www.videra.com . Its tech, supplied by Vidyo, puts Skype to shame, as if the organization needed another reason to feel shame -- if it can.

"Find and keep the 2.8.0.851 version!"

March 05, 2011  |  By GianMarco_Tavazzani

 |  Version: Skype 5.0.0.7994

Pros

A legendary past!

Cons

A ship without a captain, lost in the fog, sailing back in the past.
Ugly, bloated, in surface, incomprehensible in use and in reasons of stopping the development and cutting essential functions like history.

Summary

Skype seems to be at the sunset of his fortune. It remembers me the sad destiny of ICQ after it was bought by A.O.L. following the microsoft policy to buy-to-choke.
Time to look around for an alternative, not because Skype stopped to be by far the best choice but because it's starting sink and stopped to listen at the users who complains by ever that Skype 5 was a foolish cut with a golden past, and who don't cares about customers is only acting for Wall Street speculators.
Probably someone wants to throw Skype in the dust just to buy it at a better price, if not just kill it, anyway we end users are for them out if the game, worthless, contemned, rejected and not listened.

Help me to stay up to date about alternatives to try, my company budget is high like my needs and Skype (if 2.8 will be discontinued and stop to work) not more the answer to my needs (which 2.8 is!!!)
