If you're looking to make free voice or video calls worldwide, Skype is a great start. Its clean and user-friendly interface makes interaction effortless, so you are ready to go as soon as you launch the app.

During our testing, we were impressed by the video and voice quality of Skype, which uses VoIP (Voice over IP) technology to enable communication worldwide without paying a cent. One of its best features is the chat and mood messages: if you are in the middle of something, you can inform your contacts about it or just type a text message instead of having a voice call. This is a nice feature on its own, but it's also handy if you don't have a microphone.

But this isn't the only feature you'll love: we also enjoyed Skype's ability to handle conference calling, group video calling, and screen sharing. In other words, if you have a reliable Internet connection, Skype can easily replace your phone and lower your communication bills.

To make calls, all you have to do is create a contact list of friends, family, and colleagues, but they must also have Skype, as only Skype-to-Skype calls are free. However, a great addition to the app is its ability to call landlines or mobile phones, but you'll need to purchase Skype credits to take advantage of this feature.

Its chatlike user interface makes Skype very easy to use, yet the key to optimum performance is a reliable Internet connection. As soon as you launch the app and start using it, you will surely place Skype among your favorite apps, just like we did after our test. Skype's useful features and intuitive user interface make the app appropriate for users of all levels.

January 21, 2010  |  By msw66

 |  Version: Skype 2.8.0.722

Pros

Works great for audio/web cam overseas at no Skype costs

Cons

There aren't any. Hook up your web cam if your computer doesn't come with one and download the software - create an account an your done!

Summary

I don't see any reason why you wouldn't use it - I have regular contact with people in Sydney Australia and have not one issue

"mostly okay but..."

December 15, 2009  |  By NeilFiertel

 |  Version: Skype 2.8.0.722

Pros

reasonable video and sound with some downsides.

Cons

sound duplex not good. If there is a simultaneous speaking as happens, one side is disrupted and no sound is received. This is on a Mac at least.

Summary

The digital video processing seems to use a delta program of some sort as anything in the image that is unchanging is sharper than any motion sensed part of the frame. Say, a desk is sharper than the person's head. At first I considered this a focus issue with the webcam but it is not. objects closer and further than the person are sharp..it is the movement of the person that is thus the delta data that is then transmitted and not always in the same resoltution to save transmission bandwidth. The lack of duplex on the sound is annoying but liveable. We have to be very civilised in our conversation and make certain the other has completed the sentence but this is hard at times as there is an appreciable delay with voice at times...

"It's just great!"

December 12, 2009  |  By mondarmandirsanasini

 |  Version: Skype 2.8.0.722

Pros

Great quality calls, great video call, fast for calling, and it's FREE!

Cons

If your internet speed isn't so fast, that would be a kind of little problem. To make a great video calls you need a broadband connection.
One more, sometimes the calls also drop unexpectedly even in my broadband.

Summary

Overall, skype still provides the best voip calling service, and it has nice interface too.
