Getting in touch with friends and family is easy with this Internet telephone software, but the functionality is conditional. Skype offers a graphically pleasing interface that's much like a chat program. To make calls, you'll need to create a contact list of friends and family or use the phone-like interface to dial people directly. You also can access a pull-down menu for painless conference calls of up to four people. To make free calls, both parties will need to have the Skype software installed. To call regular phones, you'll need to sign up for a plan with SkypeOut, the developer's paid service that offers cheap by-the-minute calling. We like the intuitive chat-like interface of Skype and we were surprised at the excellent sound quality, even with regular desktop speakers. Similar to a chat client, you can set your availability status, but we also would like to see a missed call indicator or, better yet, some form of voice mail. Overall, we think Skype is a strong contender in the Internet Telephony category, and anyone who's interested in talking for free should give it a try. For international callers who have computers, this program is a no-brainer solution for long-distance bills. Watch the CNET video review of Skype:

Version: Skype 1.4.0.71
Pros: Excellent sound quality, friendly user interface, cheap calls to landlines and mobiles, decent messenger, works very well with windows XP. Also has 'search' for pals option. You can even divert calls to your landline when not on pc.
Cons: No webcam option yet but it's coming. You have to pay for a seperate voicemail if you want it. Also unused credit for calls to landlines/mobiles expires after 6 months.

"The Best Internet Based Telephone Software"
Pros: If something is perfect, it can't be written in words.
This is perfect.
Great audio quality, great connectivity and low PC to phone rates.
As compared to other PC to PC phone software available, this is the best.
Cons: None I could find.
It doesn't have any, that is.

Version: Skype 1.4.0.71
"Very disappointing SW and Castomer Care (especially for Dial-up)"
Pros: Better than nothing!:-(
Cons: I downloaded this SW a few months ago. It was OK at the beginning: the sound was good, etc. However, since I started to install updates something has gone wrong! It seems to be a whole mission to make a phone call and when you eventually get there, the call can be interrupted or the sound quality is terrible.
"Castomer Care" does not exist and I have not received any refund of money waisted on the conversations I never had! They charge you for the first minute as if this is a normal conversation even when you have to hang-up due to quality of sound, so you end up with a half of talk-time compairing to what they promise!

Version: Skype 1.4.0.71
Pros: This is what I've been looking for. I've been making long distance PC to normal phone calls for years now (Belgium -> Venezuela). The programs I used lacked sound quality and/or were quite expensive. Skype offers me good sound quality, cheap prices and the best user interface I've seen until now
Cons: Until now: none whatsoever
