Editors' Review

+
These days, even casual Web surfing can expose you to threats such as covert spyware installs and browser hijacks. This free and ingenious little Firefox extension gives you a leg up online by alerting you to potentially hazardous Web sites. SiteAdvisor appears as an unobtrusive icon in Firefox's lower-left corner. Whenever you visit a new site, the icon will display one of three colors: green means it's safe, yellow means it's iffy, and red indicates the existence of potential threats or annoyances. Clicking the arrow icon on the interface gives you an option for viewing more details, where you'll get in-depth information about the site you're visiting. SiteAdvisor alerts users as to whether a site has been known to bundle adware or spyware, unleash a deluge of pop-ups, or spam visitors. In our tests, SiteAdvisor turned out accurate and reliable results. And while it doesn't have a wide array of features, we really like the URL highlighter. Enabling this feature will display site rankings directly from your search engine, helping to guard you against drive-by installs that may initiate as soon as you type a URL. We urge any regular Firefox user who's concerned about his or her online safety to take this no-cost extension for a spin.

"An excellent extension for Firefox that helps you tell the good sites from bad"

April 12, 2006  |  By admanl

 |  Version: SiteAdvisor for Firefox beta

Pros

A very useful extension when searching the net, it displays a symbol next to the search which is either a green tick (safe), yellow exclamation mark (Warning) or red cross (bad site).

You can view details of why the site has been given that rating by hovering over the symbol and clicking on 'more'.

The amount of sites that have been rated is huge, and its free!

Cons

None

"Decent"

April 11, 2006  |  By peterbutler

 |  Version: SiteAdvisor for Firefox beta

Pros

Minimal intrusion, good idea.

Cons

Doesn't seem that useful. I've seen green sites that are affiliates of red sites and even link to the red sites. Perhaps it will improve in time, but it seems like Web sites are constantly changing, even more so than distributed malware. Is such a database even feasible? It will be very interesting to see which way this one goes, especially after being bought by McAfee.

"FANTASTIC!!!!"

April 04, 2006  |  By bly47

 |  Version: SiteAdvisor for Firefox beta

Pros

In the battle of spammers, adware, viruses, and for those who have nothing better to do with there time but to make other people's lives a living hell on the internet, this is definately a 10 STAR program!

Hey, its not the complete solution to the problem (will there ever be?) but at least it does what it suppose to do. It warns you and lets you make up your own mind.

It doesn't pop up like an annoying pop-up. It only appears when you want it to.

Little usage in system resources.

If there are people still using IE , (I don't understand why, lol) they have one for IE to that you better have.

Cons

Cons? You bet. Should have found this one sooner!!!!!!!!!

"A must have"

April 01, 2006  |  By mikeh2

 |  Version: SiteAdvisor for Firefox beta

Pros

You are much safer with this installed. An earlier review complained that it should prevent the loading of bad/red web sites in the first place. The planned paid version of the product will do that - should be a great addition for non-techies.

Cons

As of March 2006, it is still in beta. There is no documentation for the three configuration options. It can't yet deal with sites that have a huge amount of downloads such as download.com or symantec.com.

"A Little Overprotective, But Good"

March 29, 2006  |  By Lottario

 |  Version: SiteAdvisor for Firefox beta

Pros

This extention is great. It adds a nice, visually appealing button to the bottom right corner of Firefox which tells you if the site you're viewing is good or bad, based on the buttons colour (green = good, red = bad). It gives you a reasoning as to why its rated the site the way it has, as well. Also will rate sites that pop up after searches in engines like Google, with a checkmark or an x. Moving your mouse over these marks will give you more detailed information about the site that came up.

Cons

A little overprotective, doesn't like sites that even have links to other websites that may contain spyware downloads.

"A small tool that helps a lot!"

March 25, 2006  |  By mrpogiboy

 |  Version: SiteAdvisor for Firefox beta

Pros

It's small and very helpful. The homepage has a summary of most websites in the internet. It doesn't slow my computer. I used to have Windows ME with viruses. Then upgraded to XP SP2 with a clean computer. I still have very low ram and this program doesn't slow me down.

Cons

Some sites are misjudged, but you still need to use your common sense.
