Shark Dash

Editors' Review

Shark Dash is another in a long line of Angry Birds clones, but offers enough variation in gameplay that it will appeal to any physics puzzle addict.

Like many sling-shot games, the goal with Shark Dash is to pull back, then fling your hero (in this case, a cute shark) to collect or destroy items in as few shots as possible. Also like Angry Birds, the storyline is simple: the evil rubber duckies have stolen Sharkee's girlfriend, Sally, and now Sharkee is exacting revenge while taking out the rubber duckies that continue to taunt him. Sound familiar? It's obviously an overused storyline, but that doesn't take away from the well-thought-out gameplay, excellent physics, and numerous complicated levels to challenge your puzzle-solving abilities.

Shark Dash lets you launch Sharkee through 96 levels where you'll need to collect all the ducks and coins in only a few shots to get a three-star score. Like other games in the genre, your total count of stars is what unlocks the next themed batch of levels for you to conquer. But what's interesting about Shark Dash is that the game tells you the maximum number of shots you can take to get a three-star score. With this addition, you always know what you need to do and you also know "what's possible" for each level. Knowing that it can be done in one shot forces you to rethink your strategy and adds an extra fun element to the game.

For a little more variety, you'll not only be flinging Sharkee around the bathtub. In later levels you'll also use Sawy, a saw-nosed shark you can use to cut through chains to drop objects; Hammy, a (you guessed it) hammerhead shark you can use to slash through the water at duckies; and Scuby, a shark that can swim the depths for easier underwater duck capture.

Shark Dash also lets you spend your earned coins on new skins to change the appearance of your sharks, or you can spend real money through in-app purchase to add to your coin total.

While Shark Dash is nothing new in the iOS gaming category, it's put together very well, offers some variation with different fish and challenging puzzles, and will definitely appeal to those who like physics puzzle games like Angry Birds.
