Scribus offers up a freeware desktop publisher that lacks the polish of more popular, pay-for-use programs. What it lacks in pretty design, though, it more than makes up for with a full complement of useful features that compare very favorably against more expensive competition.
The detailed Web site includes a wealth of documentation, tutorials (some with video), and notes on everything from installation problems to drawing a grid to creating a text frame. We found it an invaluable resource when testing the application. There wasn't much jazz to the interface, but all the major beats were present: buttons were laid out logically and grouped according to function, without any unusual placement.
Scribus does have some oddities, mostly related to the scaling of imported images, but there's something else about it that's far more interesting: it painlessly brings in documents from the OpenOffice.org suite and it uses The GIMP for image editing. By taking advantage of these other freeware apps to boost its own productivity, Scribus enhances its appeal by forming a virtual freeware suite. We highly recommend this app to anyone who needs the power of expensive tools but can't afford them.

Version: Scribus 1.3.3.9
Pros: Doesn't look like M$ Publisher, but it looks like it is very similar in function. I am familiar with Publisher so I think Scribus will feel intuitive to me. I downloaded it to a Vista machine and everything seems to work. (It is not listed as Vista compatible) I haven't really become comfortable with it yet, but I think it may actually be an alternative to M$ Publisher.
Cons: Download and installation was quite confusing. If it was stated somewhere, I missed it, that one must first download GhostScript before installing Scribus until after I had installed Scribus. I had to uninstall Scribus and go find and install GhostScript then re-install Scribus. After all was said and done, I think it all works properly on my Vista machine as well as my older XP machine.

Version: Scribus 1.3.3.9
Pros: Not much really
Cons: I was under the impression that one could download PDF files from the Internet and then edit them like one would Word, not so, therefore waste of time. Word is good enough for my needs and for Graphics I've got Adobe Photo Shop 7, uninstalled it.

Version: Scribus 1.3.3.9
"Does the job, easy to use and the Printers were happy with the pdf"
Pros: Having used Publisher for a while I wanted to move onto something that was more "Printer friendly" i.e. produce files that would reproduce faithfully when I sent them to a commercial printing house. This does the job and gives lots of flexibility to the final output. The design features are good and easy to use. It uses "styles" and other nice ways of working.
Cons: Couple of things to think about.
1) Before you install, you must install ghostscript first. Check out their website.
2) This is not a Word-Processor *** DTP. It's a DTP. That means you do you story prep outside of Scribus including spell checking etc. Not a big deal, but you just have to think a bit more about it.
