Screencast-O-Matic lets you record your full screen or only a selected portion of it while speaking through your computer's microphone. While recording, it highlights your cursor and clicks to help your audience follow your demonstration. Overall, it looks good and works well, though the free version is limited.
Intuitive interface with all the options you need: We found Screencast-O-Matic's interface to be very straightforward and easy to navigate. You can either select from available standard recording screen sizes or just drag and resize the screen selection frame to be as large or as small as you would like, and then hit the record button. If you want to record sound as well, you can select the microphone you would like to use and adjust your recording volume. Recording from a Webcam is also supported.
Keyboard shortcuts: You can pause your demonstration by using keyboard shortcuts in order to avoid moving your cursor while recording.
Fast: The export function impresses with its speed -- a five-minute recording takes only about 20 seconds to render. This is at least equivalent to the rendering time of files created with iMovie.
Limited functionality in free version: The free version lets you record only up to 15 minutes at a time. The more restrictive limitation is that you cannot access any editing tools. What's more, the Pro version offers other features not available in the free version, such as automatic uploading to additional Web sites and the ability to record and edit while offline or outside of your Web browser.
If you want to record demonstrations on your screen, Screencast-O-Matic proves to be a good solution. It's easy to use, fun, and does its job well. However, if you would like the ability to edit your videos before rendering them, you have to buy the full version.
Screencast-O-Matic is a free screen recorder for instant screen capture and sharing. Use it right in your browser without an install at Screencast-O-Matic.com or download to run anytime. Upgrade to Pro account to create longer videos, use editing tools.
