SafeHouse Explorer creates secure, strongly encrypted volumes that can secure huge amounts of data on your main system, portable devices, and even USB drives and other storage media yet remain hidden until accessed with a password. It's portable freeware that can run without being installed, even from a USB drive or the Internet, giving you access to your protected files anywhere, including public computers. It may also be the easiest tool of its type we've tried.

SafeHouse Explorer is a slimmed-down but fully functional version of the developer's commercial products, and it shares the same technology for creating secure volumes with 256-bit encryption in your system. Individual volumes can be up to 2TB in size, and you can create as many volumes as you like, so storage size isn't a problem. The volumes are standard Windows files, too, and SafeHouse Explorer is intended to work like Explorer, with tree views, drag-and-drop, and familiar menus. In fact, it's easy to create a new volume just by examining the layout and clicking some buttons, but we think a much better idea is just to follow the program's setup wizard, which is one of the best we've seen. It walked us through the process of creating a new volume, setting up a password, securing our data, and retrieving it with clear explanations and frequent screenshots. In the time it took to finish the wizard, we'd created a large volume of secure, hidden storage space on our PC. Like hidden system files, our volume couldn't be uncovered or opened without entering our password. The program offers some interesting options, such as Tools menu items for creating self-extracting volumes, extracting volumes from executable files, and copying files to a memory stick.

Developer PC Dynamics suggests securing your USB drive before it's lost or stolen and you become the next YouTube sensation. We agree, and we'd add personal and financial records to the list; whatever you've got in Windows, SafeHouse Explorer can secure it.

"Great program ... BUT Hangs/freezes/locks up on exit"

October 22, 2014  |  By dmflathers

 |  Version: SafeHouse Explorer 3.01

Pros

As advertised... works great BUT see con on lock up

Cons

Great program ... BUT Hangs/freezes/locks up on exit,. Happens to me about 75% of the time.

Summary

Great program ... BUT Hangs/freezes/locks up on exit,. Happens to me about 75% of the times I open the program. Sometimes it unlocks in a minute or two .. BUT sometimes it takes over 5 minutes and that is after I close out every other running app. Sometimes I have to force a restart to make it close.

"not reliable"

September 21, 2014  |  By Hughes-Alexandre

 |  Version: SafeHouse Explorer 3.01

Pros

- Seems encryption works good
- Easy to understand, very few options
- Free

Cons

- Sometimes the volume says it's full, as actually it is not
- Today surprised I could not cut-paste to volume, "paste" option is disabled
- So easy to delete : just click the safehouse file (= the volume) and delete (in Windows) = all your volume is gone
- When you create a new volume, the software suggests you encrypt it before using it, which I did : This process takes plenty of time and your hard disk is at full use rate
- Cannot resize volume

Summary

I've tested and used this software for some years. But now, too much cons, I will not use it anymore.
I've found another software much better for locking / encrypting folders: "Folder Lock"

"Great Encryption"

July 25, 2013  |  By holdenn

 |  Version: SafeHouse Explorer 3.01

Pros

Its Free, only have to pay for the Pro editions with added features
Runs directly from an external drive or flash drive
Allows creation of self extracting executable files. try downloading directly from safehousesoftware site for the truly "FREE" version.

Cons

In order to access protected volumes, you must run the program. Although, the program can be stored on the flash drive or media that also stores the encrypted volume, its just an extra 5 second step you have to take when opening encrypted files on new machines. All in all, not a bad compromise, but if I had to think of a con, that would be the only one I can think of.

Summary

Definitely 5 stars. I have been testing every encryption software on the market over the past several weeks. Didn't care if I had to pay or found one for free, just wanted an easy to use encryption software that can be run from flash drives without having to be installed on other's machines and wanted to be able to use it on several different media drives and flash drives. This was definitely the one I ended up with. TrueCrypt was just as great a program, but more complicated and time consuming, but equally great encryption.

"30 Day Trial Only, and, but..."

September 06, 2011  |  By mikefrontofficesearch

 |  Version: SafeHouse Explorer 3.01

Pros

Very easy to use

Cons

1- 30 days you can't edit anything unless you pay. 2- Volumes given next available letter in the Drive sequence, conflicts with unplugged backup which has that letter allotted. 3- Volumes won't delete unless uninstalled. 4- Didn't uninstall fully

Summary

Finally uninstalled after searching :C. Not going back.

"Works fine - might be misunderstood by new users."

June 12, 2011  |  By sVen_too

 |  Version: SafeHouse Explorer 3.01

Pros

Does exactly what it says it does, and nothing more.

Cons

A note could be added to explain to new users that they need to include the file extension if they rename a file.

Summary

Many programs automatically keep the file extension when re-naming a file. With this tool, just remember to include the file extension in the new name. thisfile.jpg would become thatfile.jpg. ... anotherfile.xls would become yetanotherfile.xls. Remember to include the SAME file extension, as this tool doesn't change the file type.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This will keep files from your friends and enemies, but not from a real hacker. 256 bit encryption alone is crackable. If you're using this to conceal illegal activity, keep using it comrade.
"No Way To Screw This Up"
January 24, 2011  |  By indianacarnie
 |  Version: SafeHouse Explorer 3.01
Pros
One of the best free programs I've ever gotten. Does what it is says and does it well.
Cons
Nothing it works like a charm.
Summary
With all due respect to the above poster/reviewer I just for the life of me cannot figure out how he could mess this product up. Its probably one of the simplest programs of its type around. It walks you through every step needed. I've renamed files countless times inside the "container" without fuss of any kind. If you want/need a excellent , safe way to privately store your files .... this is it! As a bonus.... its FREE! Highly recommended.
