CNET editors' review

Reviewed by: CNET Staff

This program provides parents with a reliable tool for shielding their children from objectionable material. We should note that to try the program, you must surrender your personal information at the developer's Web site--a requirement we found a bit objectionable.

Nevertheless, this program's features and performance impressed us. In our tests, the application proved intelligent enough to block almost all pornographic sites, yet to allow, for instance, scientific articles on nudity. We were impressed with the wide variety of filters--ranging from adult-only topics, such as sex and weapons--to potentially malicious e-mail clients and search engines. Also, you can control when a user is allowed to surf the Web. Not insignificantly, it blocks the use of popular instant-messaging applications and even multimedia players, too, though in our tests the pop-up blocker didn't work very well.

Safe Eyes is well-protected against deactivation and uninstallation, and its settings can't be changed without a password. Although many full-fledged PC-monitoring suites offer much of the same functionality, Safe Eyes 2006 still will help parents sleep easier at night.

Publisher's description

From InternetSafety :

Safe Eyes 2005 parental-control software provides all of the protection needed against undesirable material on the Internet. Using SafeBrowse.com's content-filtering technology allows you to ban access to certain types of Web sites. The integrated pop-up blocker automatically closes annoying ads that appear when you visit Web sites. In this version you now can monitor all of the Web sites a user visits, and logs can be reviewed anytime through a Web-based portal. Safe Eyes 2005 also contains time controls to help you control time spent online. Best of all, Safe Eyes 2005 is the only Internet control software that will call you on the telephone when access to undesirable material is detected.

Version 3.4 includes changes to make Safe Eyes faster.
