"Dangerous and Total Trash Program!"
Version: SUPER 2009 build 35
Pros
No Pros!!! SUPER sucks now!!! I don't know what happened to this software or developer but I used to rely on the older version of SUPRE for all my conversions. I tried the new version and not only did I have to remove several maleware applications (even after I went through the installation making sure to NOT install the stupid toolbars, etc) but I can no longer use the older version (which worked fine). Stay far, far, away.
Cons
Stay away from SUPER! It is loaded with viruses and malware that are not detected because they only are invited to the party during installation. They totally killed what used to be a really cool program.
Summary
If you have the older version (which works fine) DO NOT INSTALL the new version! It will install malware and break your older version!

"Virus programs hate this"
Version: SUPER 2009 build 35
Pros
This works very well, in a variety of formats
Cons
AVG Free 2011 deletes files from this without giving you the option of stopping it. The website is extremely difficult to navigate for updates. Slow and processor intensive.
Summary
I found this a very effective, though slow software. 3* only because of virus issue. I'm currently looking for something new that anti-virus doesn't interfere with. I found out after the fact. The anti-virus recognizes files as dangerous and cleans them. Older versions of AVG Free did not do this. The developer has info up on their website about this - despite requests the files have not been added to a safe database. Other anti-virus software also has this problem.
For updates you have to scroll through several pages and click on several links to take you to a download page - and it's hidden.
This should be the only active program, because it hogs the processor, and the computer should be restarted before using the program if you've been using it for awhile. Otherwise you risk errors. It takes awhile to get used to, and could use more documentation, but after using it a few times.
I came across a dvd of live footage of a friend's band they'd never seen. I was able to rip the audio and video separately, clean up the audio & video on different software, and then recombine in a video editor to give them. I was introduced to this software in the computer lab at teacher's college. It's a shame that it is so interfered with. -
"Works if you tweak it, have to run as admin in XP too!"
Version: SUPER 2009 build 35
Pros
Easier interface than linking loads of command-line freeware. Once set-up, it's a few clicks to convert.
Cons
Unpredictable results if you don't know the parameters of every codec/container/format/etc. Which kind of misses the point of a simple interface. Have to run as admin in Windows XP (Vista is documented, XP isn't, why?) Firewall/AV doesn't like it.
Summary
You'd think the developers would know that it needs to be run as administrator under XP. I guess this is because of the wide variety of external plugins/auxiliary files it uses, as it's only a front-end. However, this needs documentation, as I was expecting it to work as limited user and didn't think of the administrator issue due to expecting the developers to have done that and mentioned it. Silly me, but nearly ALL software should run as limited user, end of story. The security model is there for a reason in Windows.
Also, sometimes produces huge files and no obvious reason why - what setting causes this, or what bitrate was the original file, how can we tell? This display of the original file's parameters needs to be implemented, and should be the first thing that SUPER's developers work on, as there's no way to select the correct encoding settings without knowing what will work best/work at all.
The error messages are generic and you have to work everything out for yourself. No good, although the above suggestions would solve the problem, most likely.
The interface is OK, but could do with refinement, I guess. -
"Removed MKV codec after I uninstalled."
Version: SUPER 2009 build 35
Pros
Converts video to many different formats.
Cons
HD encoding sucks. I did not like the interface. Not as intuitive as other conversion progarams.
Summary
After installation the program changed the language settings on all of my MKV videos. When I uninstalled it removed my MKV codec. I ended up having to do a system restore to fix the problem. I would not recommend this download.

"It ignores bitrate setting while encoding H.264"
Version: SUPER 2009 build 35
Pros

Cons

"Send my AV & Firewall CRAZY... WHY?"
Version: SUPER 2009 build 35
Pros
Does what it says, BUT and its a big BUT.
Cons
When i installed it AVG flagged up several issues, compressed files inside compressed files. Main program extracts & runs. AVG picked these up also my firewall COMODO flagged up software trying to access the internet even though it was set not to.
Summary
If i could trust it i would use it a lot & most likely donate to keep it updated. But i just cannot trust it on my everyday PC. Why does my AV and firewall flag it up as suspicious & dangerous? Tried a few other AV's as well & they have all picked up on this program.

Offers more choices and flexibility than most other video converters. Straightford to use (providing you understand digital video)
