Publisher's description of RootkitRevealer 1.7
From Microsoft:RootkitRevealer is an advanced rootkit detection utility. It runs on Windows NT 4 and higher and its output lists Registry and file system API discrepancies that may indicate the presence of a user-mode or kernel-mode rootkit. RootkitRevealer successfully detects all persistent rootkits published at www.rootkit.com, including AFX, Vanquish and HackerDefender (note: RootkitRevealer is not intended to detect rootkits like Fu that don't attempt to hide their files or registry keys).

Version: RootkitRevealer 1.7
Pros: This utility shows a comprehensive list of potential problems, and does a good job of explaining the possible causes. Allows you to save the analysis for future reference of off-site use. It's free.
Cons: Takes a while to run, and if you use the PC during that time it may give false positives. Perhaps it should lock up the user interface and give more obvious progress indications.

Version: RootkitRevealer 1.7
Pros: Nothing. It is impossible to use.
Cons: When I run RootkitRevealer, it displays the following error message: "Unable to install RootkitRevealer service: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." Resolving this issue is time-consuming, difficult, and not worth it. You will be much better off with F-Secure's Black Light.

Version: RootkitRevealer 1.7
"Hangs up, and hung my computer up as well."
Pros: I like what it was supposed to do.
Cons: I couldn't use it without hanging up my computer. I went to their help forum, but didn't see a cause right away for the problem.

Version: RootkitRevealer 1.7
Pros: it runs; it scans
Cons: takes forever (still running at this writing 30 minutes). for low ram computers, it will cause computer to hang up.
Summary: it may be wonderful, i don't know (it's not finished yet). it DID find changes in the registry that i personally made. at least it saw something that none of the others did. try instead gmer, IceSword, F-Secure Blacklight. these three will cure ... read more >>
