CNET Editors' review
We're here to review software, not to give our opinion on the ethics of the software we encounter. That said, we can't think of too many applications for ResourcesExtract that aren't likely to violate some kind of intellectual property laws. ResourcesExtract lets you scan for and extract icons, cursors, bitmaps, AVI movies, and HTML files from existing programs. Presumably you would want to do this because you want to "borrow" these elements for some purpose of your own. Whatever your reasons, ResourcesExtract is indeed a good way to perform this task.
The program's interface is plain and intuitive, with all of its features contained in a single screen. First, users select the exe, dll, ocx, or cpl file they want to scan. Check boxes allow users to choose from 11 different types of resources that can be extracted. There are a few other options that can be tweaked--whether to overwrite existing files or scan subfolders, for example--but that's pretty much the gist of it. Users then select an output folder and the program goes to work. We found that ResourcesExtract worked quickly and performed as promised. We liked that the program allows users to save and load configurations of options, making it easy to perform the same types of scans and extractions over and over. The program comes with an HTML Help file, but we weren't able to launch it.
ResourcesExtract is free. It comes as a ZIP file and is accessible after extraction with no need to install. We recommend this program to all users.
Publisher's Description
From NirSoft Freeware:
ResourcesExtract is a small utility that scans dll/ocx/exe files, and extract all resources (bitmaps, icons, cursors, AVI movies, HTML files), as well as stores them into the folder that you specify. You can use ResourcesExtract in user interface mode, or alternatively, you can run ResourcesExtract in command-line mode without displaying any user interface.
What's new in this version: Version 1.17 has fixed bug where binary resources didn't extract when Other Binary Resources option is turned on.
