Rescue Kit Free Edition gives you all the tools you need to recover in the event of a system crash. The software works well and is straightforward enough for beginners.

Pros

Great wizard: After you download the program, a wizard launches that walks you through the step-by-step process of setting up a USB key that you can boot from to repair your machine. The wizard is very straightforward, and works perfectly.

Range of recovery tools: Rescue Kit has a variety of features to help you recover from different problems. You can correct the Master Boot Record if it has become corrupted; you can transfer files off the system if it is non-recoverable; or you can recover a partition if you've erased it in error.

Password reset: If you've forgotten an essential password and gotten locked out of your system, you can boot from your Rescue Kit USB key and reset your password.

Cons

Slow operation: Use of the recovery tool was very effective, but operations performed from the boot key were quite slow.

Bottom Line

Rescue Kit Free Edition is an excellent recovery tool. Download it when you have a healthy computer and create a boot key in order to have the resources you need to restore your computer after a system failure.

- Makes situation worse - Doesn't explain what it's doing - Doesn't say what you problem is (if you have one). - Runs a silent wizard that always ends telling you that it worked. Then you'll find it actually made everything MUCH MUCH worse...

1 - The documentation for the rescue kit refers to other documentation on how to build the rescue media. All the download is; is the program to build the media. 2 - Every time you try to build the media yo have to enter the registration code and serial number - even on the same PC. 3 - Trying to build the media to ISO image on a fresh installed Win 7 Pro 64 bit W/all updates gets you an "Error 11 - cannot launch external process". A Google search on this error gets you one result from 2 months ago with no solution. I had high hope to use this as a replacement for the aging Hiren's Boot CD but alas, twas for not.

I wish I could say this was the first time I corrupted my boot record, I wish I could. But this one truly wasn't my fault. I was updating the BIOS on a GigaByte MB, because I got an email from them suggesting I do it - so much for registering your products. I used their utility and did everything I was asked, and couldn't reboot the machine when I was done. I know, why update the BIOS on an operating machine. Answer: They promised more fan control and temp sensing. Anyway, I tried all the standard Windows recovery tools using the install disk that never seem to work for me, and all I got was the usual switch from a BootMng error to a Invalid Partition Table error. This time I got the idea to come to CNET and look for a recovery download, found RescueKit. Followed their instructions, went to my spam folder and C&P my Product Key and SN, burned my CD, popped it in my dead machine, used a bunch of the utilities, rebooted to the wonderful sounds of Windows 7 Ultimate filling my monitor. It took me longer to write this quick review than it did to solve my problem using RescueKit. In reading some of the other reviews, I'm guessing many of these people may not have been using the right tool for the job at hand; AND a lot of folks out there don't know to check their spam file for a return email in a situation like this - or they just don't feel compelled to read the instructions. In short, SUPER product if your machine won't boot, or you can't get to Windows to run Restore or something of that nature.

Summary
When the downloaded application file is double-clicked, the user is directed to their website for accessing product code and serial number. But, you are registered for receiving their regular emails instead, to let you know of their product updates, discounted offers, news, etc. After registering you receive an email which is useless when one does not find what the registration was done for. Are they reliable ?

I attempted to download Rescue Kit 11, instead Power2Go downloaded to my computer. I need to recover corrupt files from an external hard drive. I do not need a program to burn CDs. This is useless.
