We have to admit that it had been years since we used RealPlayer, and we weren't quite sure what to expect from this version. Nor were we particularly excited about trying it out; we have a media player already, thank you, and what could RealPlayer possibly do that we hadn't already seen before? Quite a lot, it turns out. In addition to managing and playing your media, it can also download and convert videos, keep certain content private, and more.
RealPlayer has a sleek and intuitive interface that opened with a page touting its latest features. After a bit of exploration, we realized that RealPlayer could perform expected tasks, such as scanning for existing media on our computer, but that it was also capable of much more. If you've ever needed an easy way to download videos from the Web, RealPlayer can help; the program places a Download This Video button above content on sites like YouTube, and in a matter of moments users can download videos and convert them to a variety of other formats. Private Mode lets you download and store videos securely using a PIN, which is great if your taste in entertainment tends to fall on the mature side; once you exit Private Mode, videos that were downloaded in it are hidden from your library. The program also lets users sign into their Facebook account to view videos recently uploaded by friends. Combined with old standby features like CD burning and management tools for music, videos, and images, these new features make RealPlayer an innovative choice for users who are serious about media.

I discovered that RealPlayer was working hard using up nearly 100% of my computer's memory even when I wasn't using Real to download any videos! I'd been downloading wallpaper. I telephoned customer service and was given a run-around, told I could only expect limited help because I was using the free version. No way was I going to move up to the paid version when I was experiencing problems with the free version. I shall try the latest version, however I am not sure I want to deal with a company that has limited help when called upon....
Summary
I would love to know if Real is full of spyware. I asked the service representative, but received no "Real" answer.

Horrible customer service. Total rip off in the area of upgrading the product. I have upgraded from the basic to plus to superpass. Three months after purchasing the version 14, i got an alert from realplayer to upgrde free to a newer version, then in the process of upgrading, i was asked to pay 50% for version 15. I didn't. Now, they have blocked my download video feature and had the audacity to tell me it could not be fixed unless i got the new version. I asked to speak to a supervisor,and after holding for about ten minutes, was advised the supervisor was busy and couldn't come to the phone. Now,i regret doing business with them.

Would make sure i tell everybody that they are a rip off. complete waste of my time on the phone.

"Surprised how good it got"

I never liked the old realplayer and the annoying way to disable it from auto start...that's why I really was surprised how good this new one is. It plays almost all file types, even flash videos in pretty good quality (better than VLC Player) and you can even edit the .flv files...that's a big plus! I always needed something like that. It has the option to trim, share or convert your video...

I only miss a function to watch videos in different play-speeds

Though I have not used it in a long time, it gave me enough pleasure when I did.
Cons
Latest version's update feature loops; it detects the same updates to the program itself and its plugins. It even does that if you uninstall and reinstall the program anew. The online chat personnel have difficulty visualizing the problem.
Summary
Getting this program to work, when one can otherwise utilize his time more productively on his computer, is not worth the effort. For the good of my system, which is XP-Pro running IE8, I would rather get rid of this unstable program until I find an alternative.
