"Still useful after all these years..."

      May 05, 2006   |   By MacSince88

      Version: Ready,Set,Go! 7.6.6

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I used to love this program back in the early 90s. I tried out the demo today and I'm still impressed with its simplicity. It should be excellent for small copyshops or those needing to become productive quickly if you're new to DTP. It's VERY easy to learn. For most non-professionals, the learning curve for InDesign and Quark is just too steep (and so is the price). I wouldn't want to create a magazine with RSG but for flyers and the like, it's a good choice.

      "great product!"

      Summary

I've used Ready,Set,Go! for about seventeen years (it dates back to my original Mac SE!) and I love it. It's straightforward, intuitive, and it works beautifully. The support is also first-rate - - I've had a few questions over the course of all this time (not many - for the most part, this is software that I use every day but never have to worry about), and the authors at Diwan have been prompt and helpful every time.
Five out of five from this user.

      "too expensive, poor documentation"

      Version: Ready Set Go 7.6.2

      Summary

For almost half the price (99 USD) you get creator's adMaker (the so-called desktop-version), a much more versatile page layout software than rsg. i tried rsg, although there is no documentation about the limitation of the trial version and there is only rudimentary documentation on the different features of the full prgram. in the trial version the app's preferences are greyed out and documentation is missing (so i don't know what program-wide settings rsg offers).

on the other hand adMaker has a full documentation (almost 600 pages), offers regular updates and techSupport answers e-mails in about 24 hours. besides: adMaker is also cross-platform (mac/win) and offers a pro-version that - according to some reviews - beats quark xPress and the like.

"From the beginning of RSG to the OS X version"

      Version: Ready Set Go 7.6.2

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Actually, I was a pioneer user of RSG in the 1980s, when I also used PageMaker and Quark XPress. Always liked the interface of RSG. Too bad Letraset did a terrible job of marketing and maintaining the product, and eventually RSG was picked up by Diwan. I think Diwan did a great job maintaining the product, and even porting to OS X. Might be a little late, but the interface is familiar to anyone using Quark XPress or RSG in the old Mac days. Even if you use Adobe products, RSG is not too dissimilar. Between Quark XPress's draconian copy protection and licensing schemes, and Adobe InDesign's clunkiness, and Create's OS X only compatibility (no Windows compatibility, or even OS 9 compatibility), RSG can be an interesting and compliant alternative.

      "Bad Interface"

I'm sorry but this product has an absolutely terrible interface and is about as un-mac-like as it gets. If anyone is looking for a great publishing application for the Mac I would suggest checking out Create from Stone.
