CNET Editors' review
Rapid Typing Tutor may be a good program to help novice typists improve, but experienced typists looking to increase their speed may be frustrated by the program's interface.
The program contains a series of lessons that scroll across the screen as the user types. Users can choose from lessons consisting of letters, syllables, capital letters, digits and symbols, or text. As each lesson scrolls across, a keyboard diagram shows an outline of hands moving to the appropriate key. Users type through each lesson and are then shown their scores on speed, accuracy, and arrhythmic input. The main problem with the interface is that experienced typists tend to scan ahead in the text they're typing from, focusing on words or phrases rather than individual letters. Rapid Typing Tutor allows users to see no more than a few characters ahead. And since the speed of the scroll depends on the speed of the typist, those who are already fairly quick may find that the blur of text flying across the screen is hard to process visually. Users who are just getting familiar with the keyboard layout likely won't be bothered by this, but they may grow increasingly frustrated as their speed increases.
In general the interface could be more intuitive, but most users should be able to figure it out. Users can create lessons, but it doesn't seem possible to cut and paste text from elsewhere into a new lesson, which is disappointing. Installation and uninstallation are trouble-free. For free software without limitations, this program is a boon to aspiring typists. More advanced keyboardists may wish to look elsewhere.

Rapid Typing Tutor allows accessing any lesson at any time, from the easiest to the most advanced. Custom lessons are easy to make, too. If there is a need to practice a particular key or any set of keys, it's easy to create a specific lesson to train for those particular keys.To help typists learn how to place their fingers on the keyboard, Rapid Typing Tutor displays a virtual keyboard with zone highlights. This way, typists always know which hand belongs to which zone. To make learning even more fun while teaching students how to type correctly, Rapid Typing Tutor displays two moving hands over the keyboard.
What's new in this version: Version 4.0 added multi-line support; added support of the Ctrl+Alt+Shift+key; improved running speed ( including running by LAN and Flash card ); improved user interface.

"It's progressively getting better with each new release"
Version: Rapid Typing Tutor 4.0
Pros
The graphics get better with each new release. Better organization has been added for version 4.0.
Cons
User interface still rough along the outer edges of the main window (tiny white blocks can be seen along edges against a dark desktop background) and buttons on the main black window look very unclean, quasi-child-like and rough to say the least.
Summary
I greatly commend them on their excellent efforts but unfortunately this is still a ways away from a (visually) clean application. Programming seems stable though, so I would still use it, and recommend it, but I encourage them to keep on improving. Hopefully by the time Windows 8 comes out they will own the most advanced typing tutor on Windows hands-down.

"My kid loves it."
Version: Rapid Typing Tutor 4.0
Pros
great for students learning to type
my daughter says it is almost like the one they use in school called UltraKey
saved me $50 (because I didn't have to buy UltraKey)
Even younger kids can use it
I like it too =)Cons
None that I have found yet
Summary
My daughter was soooo bored over the summer and needed something to make her brain have a bit more activity. We have been on the computer a lot learning new things before she starts 5th grade this next year. She wanted to work on her typing and said that her school has something called UltraKey. UltraKey was $50 so I came to CNET to find something that she would agree with.
My daughter picked this program herself after doing some compare shopping and she thinks it is just as good as UltraKey. It even has one thing that UltraKey does not. Games!!!. Now she can have fun and better her typing skills. Maybe I can even get my 6 year old to start working on his typing too.
Thanks for coming through for me yet again CNET! -

"Good way to improve typing skills"
Version: Rapid Typing Tutor 4.0
Pros
Fast, easy to learn and more customizable than the previous version
Cons
I wish the interface looked a little more professional, but it is still nice the way it is.
Summary
The program itself is just fine. It's me that's the problem. I got so into the habit of the old program with its static cursor and one line of text that I had difficulty adjusting to this new format they have going for them. But again, this is my fault, not theirs. This is actually a more realistic way to type, anyway.
The themes they offer are a little childish and I wish there was something slightly more professional available as a theme. Sometimes, when people see that I am using this program they assume that I am playing a game or something (which I am not) because of the vibrant colors and such.
But as I have said for previous versions, this program is great! It single-handedly got be out of the find-and-peck method of typing I used to use and now I type like a normal person. -
