Version: RSS Bandit 1.3.0.42
Pros: This is a neat bit of free software. Once installed, after 5 minutes you get the idea of how it works and after 10 minutes you have loaded up some of your own RSS feeds to keep up with your favourite news or web sites.
Those that don't know what RSS is and the point of this software will miss out big time.
The built-in internet browser is just excellent for this type of tool. You would find it difficult to decide if you were going to browse the net from your main browser or from the program.
The main thing about RSS Bandit is the amount of time you will (and you will) end up spending looking at all your favourite web sites and getting up to date. You will love it, your boss won't.
Cons: The download and uninstall process would put some people off. The file is zipped and a little awkward to get at compared to other download and run applications.
Unfortunately, calling a really good piece of free software Bandit is likely to put off mainstream users from downloading it. This is not surprising given the fear people have of downloading viruses or highjack programs. The logo just reinforces this as you do a double take at your system tray when you see the smiley pirate out of the corner of your eye and a moment of panic sets in.
The default RSS fees are annoying but easily deleted in favour of your own. It would be good to have drag and drop options on RSS feeds into the reading pane rather than the box that takes you through some options, but once you get the hang of copying and pasting the feeds from your favourite website into the tracking option there is no problem.
